4.5 to 14 leupold scope with a.o or without

Take this for what you paid for it.

I wouldn't for a second consider taking that scope off a 300mag. If you do that, I can guarantee that once you get the 4.5-14 on there, it'll look cool for about 20 minutes with that nice A/O...or until you actually use it. Then you'll be pissed because of the money you just wasted to get a scope that doesn't work as well. Been there.

Don't get me wrong. I love the VX-III scopes. Love the 3.5-10. But my 223? It has a 3-9X40 with L.R. reticle. It's perfect. My 280AI field rifle? It's got a straight 6X42 with L.R. reticle.

If you were building this as a long range target rifle, the 4.5-14 wouldn't be bad at all. But for a hunting rifle? Keep it as it sits, and spend the difference in dollars it would cost you to "upgrade" and buy more bullets. Or a rangefinder if you haven't got one.

With a good rangefinder and that nice L.R. reticle, you can run clay pigeons (or deer) as far as you can see them. It's certainly money spent smarter than the 4.5-14.

Couldn't have said it any better!! Eagleye.

Lefty, send it to Gordon in Okotoks at the Leupold center. He will happily install a L.R. duplex in your 2.5-8. I've got a 6X42 here he did that with. Money well spent.

LRD in the VXIIIs? Thanks, you just cost me a bunch of money.:p:)

The 2-7 VXII had been my choice for a up coming LH M70 338-06 build, looks like I'll be upgrading to a VXIII 2.5-8.............

Thanks.

i was lookin at this scope for my next purchase .is it good to have that ao or not .

If you do a lot of target shooting and no walk and stalk hunting then the AO is good, but if you walk a lot during your hunts you will find that the AO bumps against your body. This becomes irritating to the point where you wish you'd rather chose the 3.5-10xVX3 without adj objective. Hopefully all the bumping won't damage it.
