4 g difference between Hodgdon and Speers-Are both right?

Hello again,
I need some more advice from you folks here.

I was going to load a 130g Hdy sp with magnum LR primers and Varget for my 300 wsm. Hodgdon loads start at 60.0 g and max at 63.5.

Then I checked my Speers # 14 manual for their 130 g loads. Their load for 130 g hp using LR primers has minimun loads hotter than Hodgdon's max! Min @ 64 g,max @ 68g.

Can a hollow point and LR primer require that much more powder compared to a soft point and a magnum LR pimer?

I am too new at this to make the call. I will leave the bullets in the box until I hear from you experienced people.

Yup...time for a third opinion. That said remember that all loading data is technically on the conservative side due to liability. Really what you can do if questioning is start at the lowest value and work up from there which is probably the smartest thing to do.

In THEIR test rig, those were THEIR results.

No substitute for trying the low end load and working up from there.

Yeah. Chase down as many different sources for info that you can find, compare them, and work out a reasonable starting point, based on a best estimate between them.

Sorta like the guy with two watches, who is never sure of the exact time (which one is right, eh?) Lots of data out there to sift through, and lots of variable to contend with.

Each rifle is an entity unto itself. Gotta try it and see if it works for yours.

Thanks everyone. Probably nothing to worry about. It just seemed odd that by starting with Speers minimum, I would already be passed Hodgdon's max.Sort of like starting at max plus and going up. Must be the primer and bullet making the diffrence.
 
The newer Hodgdon loads seem to be tamed down a lot compared to their older published data. When I first started reloading I remember how hot the Lyman loads were compared to the others. That's why it's a good idea to compare different sources, see what they used for a test gun, and work your way up.
