4 legged cougars

I don't think they have any problem gnawing off a piece of frozen meat. The DO, apparently, have problems keeping coyotes, wolves, magpies, ravens, etc. from cleaning up the carcasses. They are not huge predators, and protecting an old kill is often more "expensive" for them than getting another. If a magpie can get meat off a frozen carcass with nothing but a pointy beak, I would expect a cougar's evolution prepared it to snack on one too.

Eat like a bird... they dont need much, or eat like a cougar with a vengance for fresh meat. I call bs on youre theory.:bsFlag:

Here is my letter to the MNR regarding a cougar sighting and the MNR's reply.

To: Rosatte, Rick (MNR)
Subject: Cougar sighting

Hi Rick,

I have been hunting in the Fort Frances area WMU 9A for the past 25 years. On October 15, 2011 we were leaving our moose camp on pontoon rd. and approaching cedar narrows rd. when I spotted a cougar. It was definitely a cougar, I have seen many bobcats and lynx in this area and can identify them easily by size, spotting, tuffs on the ears, tail length etc. But this cat was huge, estimated weight would be approx.
100LBS, brown in colour, no tuffs on it's ears and white and black markings on it's face, the tail was at least 24" long. The time of day was about 4:00pm with lots of light. I got a good look at it as it was only 20 feet from my truck. I can assure you this was no wolf, martin, fox, deer etc. I was in awe of what I just saw and after the sighting I realized my camera was right on the dashboard...... doh

If you need any more details please feel free to contact me.

Best Regards,

Jim

Thanks Jim- I will add it to the MNR cougar sighting database- don't feel bad as I have observed 2 cougars in Ontario & both times my digital camera was in my vehicle consol- problem is the sightings happen so fast one does not have time to even get a camera fired up. I just had a mansucript accepted in the Canadian Field Naturalist that documents almost 500 pieces of evidence (DNA, scat, hair, phots, racks, sightings by MNR biologists etc) to prove that cougars exist in Ontario. It should be available on their websiet in a couple of months if you are interested. Cougars are classed as an endangered species and are protected in Ontario.
Thanks again for reporting your sighting.
Rick

Everyone wants to hunt one, just as they are trying to reintroduce a population that was once hunted to near extinction. They are soooo dangerous they must be hunted again to extinction. SAVAGES.lol.

Ah, I was under the impression that you can't kill something that doesn't exist(extinct). So if I shot one, too bad doesn't exist here. But guess they classify it as endangered and protected now... still sure anyone seeing one [close-by] won't hesitate to take it out :p

I know of a farmer who had a friend of his shoot 3. Mother bedding on his land, had 2 pups. Can't prove it with pics though, so didn't happen obviously. Still didn't personally see it, but the owner of one of the lands we hunt is a friend of his and don't see a reason for them to lie. Either way there's been enough sightings and the MNR acknowledging their presence so doesn't really matter.

I wonder if these might be eastern cougars, there used to be eastern cougars here in N-B and they are supposed to be extinct.
Thing is there have been sightings in N-B and N-S over the years ,a friend of mine has pictures of one near my house that they seen 3 years ago.

Have you noticed a difference in the deer population as well bull dog ? There are a lot more yotes in my area this yer about 1/3 the deer there were last year . Also more moose and some are speculating that there are more wolves due to the moose .

there was a cougar hit by a car on highway 311 in northern nova scotia. pics were taken and put in the local news. there hae also been sighting near jemseg new brunswick and some bad video taken of that one also.

I've seen 2 cougars in Ontario. One was about 10 years ago just outside Lakefield in WMU 74A and crossed the lane on my parents farm right in front of me. The second was in a freezing rain storm on the edge of Hwy 7 just outside of Kaladar. I was coming back from a sled race and the cat was pacing on a rock ledge next to the highway. Both times I am certain it was a cougar.

Lots out in the area from Brantford, London to Ancaster, Cayuga areas. I have seen tracks on my friends farm in the snow 2 years ago. I have never seen one in person and am glad I havent. A worker of mine had a farm in Cayuga, neighboring farmer had a small steer killed by a cougar.
