I am going to purchase a XD9 this year but I'm torn between the 4" or 5" models. Which do you prefer and why? I should mention that I am dabbling in the thought of IPSC Production shooting (I shoot standard now). Also has anyone bought one of their custom models? TC

Never mind the fact that the XD family doesn't appeal to me...the 4" isn't importable into canada as the legal barrel length must be +106mm.
So the decision would be easy, I would think.

I owned an XD40 and found an abnormal amount of wear on the steel guide rod (gouged within 500 rounds). Also, the accuracy was at least 3X what I expected. I sent it back for service and nothing was fixed - and the accuracy was "within specs" at about 6" @ 20metres - presumably from a ranson rest....anyway - I know alot of members love their XD's but I sold mine and bought another Sig.

get the xd 40 you wont be dissapointed for the price. I paid $650 new for mine. Worth every penny. O to answer your question the 5 inch is the only model available in canada so far.:(

Actually you could get Questar to bring you in a 4-inch XD with a 106mm barrel.

I have yet to see one in canada! That may be a cool gun. I personally thing the 4 inch duty gun looks better. Just like the glock 17 looks a hell of alot better than the ugly longslide version glock 31.

The dude from questar said he could do it, same price as the g19's he brings in or thereabouts.

i shot a sub compact XD recently. Its one funny looking gun. It works well but I liked the glock 26 better for some reason.

a XD with an aftermarket barrel is not production legal....

get the 5"

To clarify for all those that don't shoot IPSC like me, the XD in 4 inch is perfectly legal with a aftermarket barrel. You may however not be able to shoot it in the "production class" for IPSC competition.

Glock 31 is a 4.49" barrel .357SIG not the longslide G34 or G35 that your referring to.

Personally, I think the 5" barrel XD look horrible compared to the 4" versions that we can't legally own, which is why I am a Glock fan, never liked the XD that we are allowed in Canada. I'd rather spend an extra few hundred and get a Glock than an XD anyday of the week.

totaly agree, if it had full length dust cover it be a looker...

I think that's the reason I'm not too fond of them myself. G&A had a nice article on the .45ACP version recently but the 5" model just looks bad compared to the 4" one, the dust cover and muzzle area is better designed and more appealing. The XD is a good gun, I am just not crazy about the looks of the one our government "allows" us to own.

I have the XD-9 5" and it is a great weapon and i have had no prob's with it at all and as far as accuracy don't blame the gun blame the shooter my shoots straight better than some glocks and sigs at my range.

I shot a 4" xd 40 at a range in Vegas .It is the "right" barrel length for this pistol .The 5" does not look or feel right.

The barrel only needs to be 5mm longer...i'd rather spend the extra cash and get one from questar. I'm sure a 5mm barrel would not hurt the look of the firearm. What do you think is the cost of an aftermarket barrel?
