40 cal 1911

"...would it be cost prohibitive..." Hi. Not necessarily, but it won't be cheap. You'd need a barrel(Needs fitting by a smithy), a different slide and magazines. Or buy new mags.
Colt made a .40 S&W 1911, long ago. Apparently they had trouble getting the mags to work properly, so they dropped it. There are other companies, Stateside, making .40 S&W 1911's too.

It is possible, but probably not worth the effort. It would likely be less expensive to buy one of these:

The only drawback would be the proprietary double stack magazines.

I prefer to keep 1911s in their original calibre. They generally work best as 5" .45 ACP guns and the cost difference between .40 and .45 is small with lead bullet reloads.

i looked at the DARK ones but not a fan of the double stack, and i can get tons of 40 brass for free, cant say the same of 45 acp brass though. Why cant norc just make a damn 40 cal 1911 :p

wouldnt touch a para with a 40 ft pole, Bul are polymer are they not? and STI is a little outta my price range i was looking for a cheap way to use the seemingly endless supply of 40 brass
The Bul's frame is stainless steel encased in polymer. I've got two Bul's and can't say enough about them but then they are difficult to find right now. Brass is cheap anyways so I wouldn't make that a deciding factor.

I have a Kimber single stack in 40
It likes Wilson combat mags better than the ones it came with
The last cartridge in the original mag sometimes wouldn't feed

I'm not to sure of this but,i saw an old 1911 Springfield In Gobles and I'm sure it said it was in 40 cal. I can stop in and check if you want, My apology if I'm wrong. Maybe someone can chime in and confirm model and years of productionof the gun.

Another way to go is to pick up a Colt Delta [or other 1911] in 10mm and have a .40 S&W barrel fitted to it as a "drop-in". I did that with one of my Colt Deltas. The .40 barrel makes for inexpensive practice as there is tons of free .40 brass laying around our local ranges after the cops practice, so reloading for it is a breeze....
