I've only seen two squibs happen in .40 and I've noticed the same thing (one was mine, one was another person).

I noticed that in both, the bullet only went down the barrel about 1/4 - 1/2 inch, and that the next round would not chamber properly..

so my question is.. is this "normal" based on the weight of the .40 and not having enough energy (from just the primer) to move further down and cause a more dangerous obstruction further down the barrel..

??

My only squib experience was with .357 in a S&W Highway Patrolman. The primer moved the 158 gr. LSWC far enough out to lock the thing up (fortunately!). Went and pulled all the bullets from that particular loading session, much to the displeasure of wife and dogs (all that banging on the concrete floor). Counted myself lucky it didn't go halfway down the barrel, though I knew something was up from the faint "pop".

There is no "normal" for squibs. The exact same squib may push the bullet a bit further down the barrel next time. Or maybe you might be using a hotter primer next time. Or the bullet could be a hair bigger or smaller.

Way too many variables including the ammo(squib), gun, shooter's grip, etc, etc to call anything "normal" as far as squibs go.

I have seen a sqib in a revolver, just locked it up, as mentioned. I can think of two in different rifles, each of which didn't get thebullet all the way in the barrel, and both were cast bullets, one of 45 calibre and the other of 30 calibre.
