Looking at carbines like the Beretta Storm and the Ruger PC series, I have a question about relative potential increases in muzzle velocity from, 16" barrels. First, does factory ammunition in 9mm and .40 calibre tend to gain velocity (say 180 grain FMJ in .40 caliber or 115 grain FMJ in 9mm) in 16" barrels?

If so, which round gains more velocity? And which has the most combined "energy" (given the mass and speed of the bullet) coming out of the muzzle? I know 9mm is a good carbine round, but what about .40 caliber? Does it do better than .45? Which is the most powerful coming out of a carbine?

Some reloading manuals list separate reloading data for pistol cartridges in rifles and rifle cartridges in handguns (TC guns). The .40 S&W, depending on the powder, etc. will gain about 25% in velocity in a 16" versus a 4" barrel. Similar for 9mm and 45 ACP.

If you want more power get a 45 ACP Beretta Storm. Nice big holes in paper versus those small 9mm and if you have a non-restricted barrel on it would be cool hunting with it for small critters.

It's nice having a rifle or carbine in the same pistol caliber that you already reload for. Cheap to shoot too.
