40 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips for coyotes?

Haven't used the 40's for yotes but the 150gr 30 cals in my 30-06 all stayed in the antelope I shot last year. Only found one of the bullets and there wasn't much left at all. They were going 3000 fps and hit length wise as well as broadside. They seem like very fragile bullets and should work perfect for saving your pelts.
I hope to try some 55gr BT's in my 6mm scooting somewhere around 4000. Should be good times.

Well, my .222's were only pushing them at about 3400fps over a good case full of h-335 but the results were pretty gory on Jackrabbits. I shot several at under 100yds and a few beyond that and the damage was huge no matter where I hit them.

I shot a coyote through the ribs at 8 big steps with a 40 BT out of a 223 a few years ago. No exit hole. Like the dummy that I occassionally am I threw the coyote in the back of the truck with the entry side down. About 4 hours later I literally had to scrape him off with a shovel, he'd bled out and froze to the bed.
I think it would be quite difficult to put a BT through a coyote if the velocity is in the 4000 range

I have used the 50 gr BT in the 223 WSSM which duplicates your load, and it is messy at close range, but past 175 yards seems to save the fur reasonable well. Tell me how the 40s do,

Shot yesterday at the range in the Stevens 200. River Rat and I were up there to sight in a couple of rifles. We are heading out for coyotes between Christmas and the New Year. Hopefully we'll be able to post a report soon.

I have tried the 150 gr in my 7mm rem mag at about 3100 fps I have used this on sheep and had very poor results.I also shot a wolf with one and could not get the hide stitched back together to make a mount there was to big of hole same with my sheep.That was a heartbreaker for me so I will not use them anymore changed to the barnes tripple shock love it.

I shoot a 218Bee used the 40gr bal tips and they were absolutely amazing on paper. On a dog though that was were the problems began they do go smack in a hurry and as a revenue hunter I cannot afford this dammage. I am using Rem generic 55gr FMJ behind a healthy dose of Lil Gun works like a hot damm. Also am using a Tikka T# in 6.5x55 use the 85gr Sierra add a little bit of apoxy to the end and shes just like a FMJ.

I use nothing but the 40 grain V-Max in my .22-250. My handloads average 3942 fps, basically the same as Ted's .223 Improved. I've shot a bunch of groundhogs with these and they almost never exit. I can't even picture one exiting on a coyote.

I shot a pest fox at our the farm one year with Btips varmint , I think 50g but I would have to dig through the books, dont have the 22-250 any more.
I shot it right side on angling to me at close to 200y.
I removed That half of the body it did not go through hit the shoulder and peeled off the side of the fox. to the hip and found a piece of bullet stuck in his right hind all of 4-5 grains of it. I figure the bullet was doing close to 3000 FPS at that range or abouts. Hot Hot loads ! with IMR 4895 custom gun.

That surprises me. My experience with the V-Max is that groundhogs generally look like they've been scared to death rather than shot. I was so surprised by the results of the V-max that I autopsied one this summer and the entrance (which couldn't be seen) looked like a stab from a pencil when the skin was removed. The insides were liquid and the far side of the body was totally hammered but the bullet didn't exit at all.

I load 55 gr. Nosler BTs in my 223, but have yet to get a chance to field test them on coyote. On paper they are great, half MOA 5 shot groups. I think they will hit hard and possibly exit, but I guess I iwill have to find out the fun way.
Took me a while to find my old reloading notes but I finally did, I had a Ruger #1V in 223 years ago and found that even the 40gr. BT's would exit a coyote on broad side shots even at 250yds. And yes the wounds were gruesome.
I used RP cases trimmed extra long to allow long seating of the bullets. Win WSR primers, and Win 748 powder.
Loads ranged from 29.3gr. to 29.7gr.
velocities ran from 3560fps, to 3610fps.
I found no bullet at that time that would reliably stay in a coyote on broadside shots, perhaps some of the newer 35gr'er slugs would be of consideration.
The best hide preserver slug I ever used over the years was a 80gr. .243 cal FMJ in a 243Win, but they have there own issues with regard to marginal hits and built up areas.
