40 S&W in a smaller bodied size pistol, what to look for?

I'll vote for the S&W M&P40. I've go small hands and even I use the medium backstrap. I tried a P226 with the E2 grip and didn't like it--I found that it lowered my grip on the frame too much. I don't have any issues with my P226 with the normal factory grips. I also own a Glock 17 (same frame size as a 22 in .40) that fits me fine.

Sig p239 will probably be the smallest 40cal pistol with all metal construction. Just be forewarned that 40 is a snappy cartridge already, it will be magnified in a compact pistol.

The M&P is easily one of the best .40s on the market and can be readily adapted to small hands.

i have small palms with longer fingers, the tok grip is tiny, its kinda unforgiving, and teaches you to be a better shooter, the 7.62x25 packs more power than most would think! for the price is a great value(imho) , i also enjoy my hi-power, very compfy, and my m&p 9 does have a nice feel , but is very light and definitly shows it in felt recoil/reaction
trust me if you walk into any decent gunstore they will be more than happy to help you "try on" many differant models.
if your lookin for more "pop" and a nice fit....a .45 1911 with flat palm swell and thin grips would fit most smaller hands too!

You can add the only gun I believe of those listed whose design originated with the .40cal. Most of, if not all of the gun designs listed here started life as a 9MM.

To the OP buy a gun that fits the primary purpose you are purchasing the gun for. If it was for IPSC Standard Division I might suggest a 1911 from STI with a coned barrel and all the bells and whistles. For IDPA I would tell yo to consider the 9MM over the .40cal based upon the rule set now in place. I then would suggest a Glock 17 or better yet for small hands a M&P. Get to a range and rent some makes. You will soon find a model that you like from those listed here.

Take Care

I went through this looking for a smaller 9mm a couple of years ago and I ended up buying the Steyr M9. I have small hands and stubby fingers. I really like it.
The same pistol chambered for .40 is available.

Fired the G27, it's a fairly small but fat gun. 40cal in a small gun is to be carried a lot and fired a bit. However you can get a 9mm barrel for your G27 allowing you to fire both calibres from the same gun. I have the G26, a very accurate gun considering. For smaller hands I would go M&P in .40cal.

Take a look at a STI Ranger II in .40. I have small mitts and the Ranger fits very well. Add in Tripp Research 10 round . 40 mags and you have one the smallest 1911 platform guns available in Canada. Fun gun to shoot. Good for Classic Division in iPSC - not sure about IDPA/CDP. Pics and details available on Freedom Ventures web site (board sponsor).

+1 HK P2000 if you want a hammer gun, they're cool, small, and have that HK cachet.
+1 Glock 23 / restricted barrel if you like Glocks. Also cool.
+1 Glock 27 if you have to have small (though the restricted barrel sticks out an inch vs. about .25 inches on G23 or P2000).

The P229 is SIGnificantly bigger than the HK or Glocks.

I've never seen a P239 in .40 ... do they even exist up here?

I might be wrong but for classic division you need a bushing barrel not a bull barrel 1911. STI guns are top notch though...

You might be right... the tactical version has the threaded barrel and is available as 9mm. The others are available in 40 but are prohib unless there is a longer barrel for them. I guess the OP can scratch the 239 off his list :(

Personally, I would go for something with a metal frame. It would absorb the recoil of the high pressure .40 cal round very nicely; especially given the smaller framed pistol. SIG 228 would be nice. A CZ or a Jericho would also be nice.

You are wrong. IPSC Classic division allows bull barrels (Rulebook, page 53 outlines Classic Division). You may be thinking of other sports like USPSA or IDPA.

Pretty sure that the Ranger II is good to go for single stack in USPSA even with the bull barrel. The reason I believe is due to it being a commander size 1911 (4.2" barrel). Bull barrels are a no go with full size government model 1911s (5" barrel). Could be wrong but pretty sure.
