40 S&Ws Suck

I think I have the solution to the debate... get a guinea pig (or several) to get shot with each caliber in the head and see which is better  Getting in a debate about this issue is just as stupid as the video that was posted to YouTube. Everyone has their own opinion... I have all the calibers in question and I put nice holes in paper. Few of us have had to shoot in a defensive situation, so it's all just opinions. Everyone loves their own caliber and will fight for the rest of time about it.

40 doesn't suck. I think it's more fun than 9mm, but at an additional cost. I shot some 165g AE in 40 and was surprised to see how snappy and fun it was! The 180g was kind of boring compared to it. I grouped extremely well too. Unless a forum sponsor has a great deal on bulk 40, it is more expensive to shoot. 45 is even more. I am sure the reloaders don't seem to see much of a cost burden to these calibers.

Excessive cost makes it inferior to 9mm and being "fun" has no bearing on what makes an effective caliber and/or firearm.

Actually it does. If someone likes shooting 40, all the power to them. I love shooting 40 because it is fun. Effective caliber and firearm? For shooting paper? 22lr is the best choice. In a defensive situation, I pick up a 12 gauge with 00 Buck. Solved. This thread, the youtube video in question and this debate is just stupid.

There is a reason why the header states "Forum for the eternal conflict between the 9 and the 45" and now we can add 40.

Best round... never heard anything about cost being mentioned. The dummy in the video said 40 had more recoil and the guns wore out faster. He just couldn't shoot as well with a 40 and thus can only shoot a 9. Again, this debate is unending and not winnable.

You're right. As a reloader, I'm indifferent on the cost of 9mm vs 40S&W and next-to-indifferent on 45ACP.

But, as a reloader (or just a guy like me, who buys factory-rolled), there is the kaboom issue. The reality is still that kabooms are very rare with 9s, but extremely common with .40s, and somewhat less so with the .45ACP. Again, the issue is the greater hoop stress in the wider diameter cartridge.

Once you mention "best caliber" everything goes out the window. It's now a SHTF, self defense, knockdown power, high capacity mags, zombie defense debate...

Kabooms????Only if you have an early Glock, later models have fully supported chambers. Of the three you list the .45acp I would think this round would be the less likely to kaboom given the low pressures the cartridge runs at. Common in the 40cal, what is your source for that info? Outside of the Glock I have heard of few kabooms in other pistols shooting the .40cal. The IPSC Standard shooters go through tons of .40cal with few if any issues.

Take Care

Like titling a thread: '40S&W Sucks' you mean....

That's what JY said. Those are his words. I thought it would be better than titling it "THIS IS THE NEWEST VIDEO FROM JY AND I'M POSTING IT HERE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE INCASE SOMEONE CARES TO WATCH IT". Sorry if you didn't like what I titled the thread.

Agreed. Where'd the guy go who (re)started this anyway??

I'm the one who posted this video because I came across it and thought it might be interesting for the members of the community.

I never started a debate, as I have no opinion one way or the other. I don't own a .40 (yet), and this video hasn't done anything to change my mind about getting one as soon as I get Xmas shopping out of the way (if you must know)

I only commented on the magazine capacity, as others have pointed out, being limited to 10 in Canada.

Is that what you wanted to know?

I am wondering why you posted this thread with this video. Why is this guy such an expert on firearms or calibers? If you post this with such a bold statement you will just get a debate and fighting. This is CGN, that's what we do . This guy is just another dummy with an opinion and not worth posting. As you see, he disabled comments as he knew he'd be swarmed with people who would take him up on it. I own 7 different calibers and I like them all.

The OP was just posting out of interest. (I actually found it so..) NBD, right?

His only inquiry was as to which .40 (gun) was designed around the cartridge. I believe it was the H&K USP, but may be incorrect...

I really don't think he was looking to start this sh!tshow...

I posted it as a general interest piece and because he is known (for good or for ill) in the YouTube-verse, and his other videos have been posted here as well and discussed (usually dismissed) before, so don't shoot (figuratively speaking) the messenger!

I know the HK USP was designed around the 40 cartridge. I am sure there are others as well. I'm not blaming the OP for posting this, but it just seems that CGN'rs take things to the extreme... NBD is right. I thought the video was of some idiot talking out of his a$$ to tell you the truth. Making bold statements with no scientific proof is just stating your opinion.

Should post another video saying "9mm Sucks" and "45acp Sucks" (to make it fair) as it's just another armchair quarterback stating his/her opinion.

You Sir, are correct. I'll buy you a beer next time I'm in Cow-Town.

BTW, thanks for the info on the USP. That now adds another gun to my list of possibilities....................ovrec.

He has 2 more zanier ones that top this. One is "Bullpups suck" (which MAC posted a rebuttal) and the other classic "1911s suck". You can find them on YouTube, if you feel your blood pressure is too low and needs a boost.

Thanks for posting that pic of your USP. The barrel has polygonal rifling, right? Do you find it makes a difference vs standard rifling?
