Reusing the "Affordable .40 1911 what's out there?" thread here...

I was wondering if I convert a .40 1911 to 10mm (have a competent gunsmith ream the factory barrel) how would that effect the resale value?

Just buy an EAA Witness if you can't afford a 10mm 1911. By the time you're done with your custom conversion, you won't be saving much if anything at all over the cost of a factory 10mm 1911.

I would, do you know who sells them here?

They are about $400 in US if I spend $300 to get it imported +tax/duty I will be looking at about $800...if not more :(

I asked couple of months ago, was told they can't locate/get them....
Another option would be to get a used S&W 1066, which is arguably the best non-1911 10mm pistol ever made. There's one in the EE forum that looks to be in mint condition and is listed at $725. If I wanted a 10mm gun, I'd probably snap it up.

any thoughts?

Personally, I'd go the other way. I'd get a 1911 already in 10mm [like a Colt Delta] and then have a .40 cal barrel fitted to it as a drop-in. You still maintain the value of the 10mm 1911 and have the .40 cal option given the brass is so plentiful............. ;)

+1

I used to own that very gun & would buy it back in a hearbeat if I didn't already have a Colt Delta 10mm 1911 that I'm getting a .40 S&W barrel fitted to.

I would take a 2nd or 3rd gen S&W auto over a 1911 any time......:) No bushings to fit, no links to break, no grip safety, external extractors, more slide/frame bearing surface, etc etc :)

I don't really like the look of the 1066 10mm...

So what about the resale value? Would converting a .40 1911 to 10mm decrease the value, add to it (since its kinda original) or wouldn't effect it?

The general rule of thumb is that any modification (except possibly a customization by a renown high-end gunsmith like Ted Yost) will decrease the value of the gun. Having said that, if you get a cheap gun like Norinco, it won't have much value in it to begin with, so you won't lose too much. However, if you get something decent like an STI Trojan, you are likely kill the resale value.

I'm thinking of getting a .40 Kimber and have Armco do the barrel work.

I can get one for a decent price so it and would likely cost less than a new 10mm Kimber...

Factory ramped barrel or not? If not, then I'd consider keeping it as a .40 and looking for a 10mm barrel as a drop-in. I've seen non-ramped 1911 10mm barrels come up on the EE from time to time. The .40 is nice to have since brass is very plentiful and once fired ex-cop stuff is usually priced 'right'..... ;) while 10mm brass is usually very expensive and scarce.... :(

I'm pretty sure .40 Kimber is ramped...

I'm really not that interested in .40 caliber...just never really cared for it. I want a 10mm because it's a bit more powerful than 9mm which is what I usually shoot in semi-autos; for me .40 doesn't offer that much more (over 9mm)to warrant the price increase. I'd be more interested in .357sig or 9x25 (so I can use 9mm bullets)... I reload so once I get several hundred 10mm cases I should be set for a while (don't plan on shooting IPCS with it or anything like that).

hmm I would like to be able to get a good chunk of my investment back if I ever decide to sell it, if I’ll loose to much I probably won’t do it.

How much would I likely get for a .40 Kimber stainless converted to 10mm with a couple of (aftermarket) 10mm mags? assuming in EX cond. ?

.40 S&W to 10mm Conversion?

Just wonder how/if this .40 S&W to 10mm conversion was done/accomplished? It sounded like a cool project...

I myself actually went the other way... I had a .40 S&W barrel fitted to my blued Colt Delta Elite 10mm. It was done using a .40 S&W Para barrel where the ramp was milled off to go to the standard link & pin set-up. This was done so that the .40 S&W could be used as a "drop-in" & not requiring any alteration to the Colt Delta frame/feedramp. And still be able to go back to the 10mm barrel when desired. Work was done by Gunnar at Armco.

The predominant reason for this project was to take advantage of the availability of the plentiful .40 S&W 'once fired brass' littering our local ranges. While 10mm brass/ammo is scarce & when encountered usually expensive.

Decided to postpone 10mm project... :(

My plan was to buy a Kimber .40 and get a 10mm barrel fitted. SIR had them for like $875at oe time but they increased their prices... I ended up getting a P220 (in a trade) and got set up to reload for the .45ACP... Didn't want to spend another few hundred for 10mm set up... And now that my PT1911transfer is finally approved I'm stuck with the .45...:)

will get a 10mm at some point for sure just not right now.
