i've been doing a lot of research online, and have noticed a lot of pages concerning "stopping power". which shell do you think it would be worse to be shot with: .40 or .45?

Have fun,hard call ,both are good.

Get one of each.:D

I'm with Greenhorse, you've got two hands so get both... I started with the 9mm, then the .45 and finally the .40 to fill the gap.

I think .40's supposed to be the "in-between" of the 9mm and .45 ACP. I'd personally like a Mk23 in .45 myself, but USP .40's are supposed to be daaaang accurate.

I am rather undecided, a 45acp is already a 45 calibre and a 40 S&W has to expand to get to 45 calibre. What does that tell you? Seriously, a 45acp is easier to shoot because it's recoil is straight back; a 40 S&W has what is described as a snappy recoil and the 40 S&W pistol climbs after being fired. For me, I will take the 45acp for defensive purposes. Regards, Richard :D

Stopping power is myth;

.9mm. 40, .45 will not nock a person to the ground simply because they're hit, not going to happen. Even if you hit vitals there won't nesseseraly be an immediate effect...

i dunno, the 9mm seems to be a wimp round.

I beg to differ IM Lugger....large calibre rounds DO posses stopping power indeed. At 20 yards or closer wearing nothing but light clothing (T-shirt) and being hit centre-mass by a 230 gr. Jacketed Hollow Point .45 Auto at 880.fps.....my friend, you'd hit the ground pretty fast.

Now lets take a .44 Magnum......at point-blank-range useing a 240 gr. JHP fired at centre-mass....the result would be DEVASTATING!!!

"stopping power" really translates to "shot placement". You wouldn't be undergunned with either the .40 or .45. For that matter, I wouldn't feel undergunned with many modern 9mm cartridges.

As for getting shot. Either caliber with will end a persons day in a hurry.

Pistol calibers are all compromises, just pick the compromise that you are most comforable with. For me, I currently shoot (XD) .40S&W. If CCW ever comes to be, I would carry .40 because that is what I feel is the perfect compromise for me and it is what I practice the most with.

a wimp round :rolleyes:

Try +p+ 9mm loads and then come back and say it.

those seem to be ok, but aren't they awfully hard on the guns? talked to beretta, looking at the storm carbine, and they do not certify it for continuous use with +p ammo, even in .45.

that brings up a second question, why can the storm handle 35000 cup loads in 9mm and .40, yet +p .45 at 23000 is a no go according to beretta?
