.40 vs 45acp for ipsc?

What's your goal in IPSC, to win, or to gain greater facility with your "service weapon"? If you want to gain greater facility with your favourite gun, use it.
If you want to win, get physically fit so you can run fast and be nimble, then get a gun, and ammo, "designed" for the rather esoteric and arcane "game".

Correct, get a gun that goes bang when you pull the trigger and get bullets that make holes in the paper or go splat when they hit the metal.

I just shot my new XD40 Tactical with the olive green grip.last nite for the first time in our IDPA shoot nite. I love it. It fits my hand great-ergonomics of the pistol. The XD45 is a bit bigger and fit just a bit better, but my buddy shoots 40SW in a Sig, so thats why I went with the D40. Great price. Bought it from P & D Ent. It was their last XD40. They do have a XD9 and a XD45.

For just getting into the IDPA shooting at my club, the price was right, plus the pistol fit the best in my hand.

Or if you reload, downloaded 40SW can be competitive while still giving you the option for shooting standard power 40SW whenever else you might want/need to.

45acp XD ... you would be at a competitive disadvantage in IPSC. You can shoot it if you want (like if you ONLY shoot 45s or you have a source for free ammo or something) but I wouldnt shoot a 45 when a 9mm or downloaded 40SW is available. Less recoil is your friend here.

Factory ammo is also more costly for 45acp, which might affect how often you practice....

I have a Glock21 (45ACP) and it has less recoil than my SS Sig226 in 40SW, so "I" don't really know what your talking about. As far as cost goes, if I use cast bullets, I can reload my 45ACP for almost the same costs as .22LR....

Sgt Striker

If you are a competitive shooter with some skill then in my view for IPSC you go:

Open - Any of the wonder 9MM (Includes the .38Super) packed into the most expensive Buck Rogers gun you can afford.

all other Divisions .40 Cal Major

except Production 9MM

For IDPA

CDP by definition .45acp

SSP/ESP - 9MM

Recoil being the deciding factor in all cases. I have tried downloading the .40cal to PF of 125 and just can't get close enough to the mild recoil of the 9MM in production.

All that said I prefer to shoot for fun the .45acp and is my choice for any defensive situation I might find myself in.

Take Care

lol....well...how to post a follow up to that...

just for history sake..I use .40 in IPSC too....mostly for all the reasons posted above...

still major in most cases, cheaper than .45 and just because.

I started IPSC with a .45 but soon changed to the .40..again..just because.

I Just left the IPSC nationals at PoCo this afternoon. (Just observing- looks like fun!).....and Ladies, there was a good representation from the female gender I might add!:dancingbanana:
