40 yard range 458 win mag

With a nice scope such as a Swarovski just go ahead and dial it at 100 yards! Once you got that done pop off the scope and practice with the open sights!

i just about sh*t nyself when i saw the detailed knowlege from your post until i relized who it was thanks again for that rifle i am taking it bear hunting this spring and hoping to catch the resaults on video of both my derrick hand with his bp and me with my thumper

I don't know much about this but it would seem that it's based on not only your rounds but also on the rifle itself as to weight and recoil and how high over the barrel centerline your scope is mounted. You can certainly zero out any windage corrections but for azimuth I think you're stuck until you can find a 100 yard or better range.

i plan on setting out 100 yards but i was thinking about 40 because thats the phoenix gun range in edmonton and as it is indoor i won't have to worry bout wind drift on that day as apposed to setting my sights in a (even very mild) wind the having to take a shot in a different wind on an animal that being said its mostly cabin fever i've got plenty of time to wait on conditions before my bear hunt

I am not sure about 100 yards but i have heard that at 20 yards you gun should be shooting the same as 200 yards

That is more or less true (25 yards is more often used) with a flat shooting round, but a 458WM would not be as flat shooting.

Hawkeye, can you shoot big boomers like that at your indoor range?

They let you shoot a .458 win mag inside?
Summerland range won't let me use 38 special loads in .357 brass inside.. and all lead bullets only... I have no problem with that. I shoot a lot of cast, but aren't there bullets designed for indoor use because there is no exposed lead?

Sorry side tracked. Are you shooting factory ammo (velocity?) and how high is your scope and I'll make the computer figure it out.

This totally depends on your bullets, but for a barnes banded solid doing 2050FPS

With mid height rings, you probably want to be about .5 inch high to get in the ballpark. A 458 WM will be crossing line of sight somewhere around 25 yards to get a 100 yard zero. If your rings are LOWER, you want the POI HIGHER (up to about an inch for really low rings). If your rings are LOWER, the bullet will cross line of sight CLOSER to you.

If you decide to shoot that at an indoor range, I would be courteous to let everyone else know your intentions. It will be very very loud. The boom from that rifle at an indoor range will be felt in the chest of any other shooter nearby. I would also advise you to wear ear plugs AND headphone type hearing protection.

Assuming your sights at 1.5" above the bore, you should need only be about 3/16" high at 40yds to be spot on at 100yds. give or take a 1/16th or so.:D

The weather is awesome these days, just go to the outdoor range.:)

Sunny and 14 Celsius here in Victoria today....Whats the problem?:p

You don't tell us what bullet or velocity you have, but somewhere around 1/4 inch high at 40 yards is what I come up with.

Please send me a copy of the footage. My latest "love-in" is with the 375 H&H. Gonna put the hurt on some bears real soon. :)

i sure will TMG. for those asking about the bullets i've got winchester super x 510gr soft point cxp3 but i can't find anywhere on the box what the velocity might be
okay google is my friend the muzzle velocity is 2040 100 yards 1770

But really, you don't have to worry about the wind. Shoot at Phoenix if that is your only option, but there is nothing to stop you shooting outdoors. Today was beautiful at +6 deg C. The wind would really have to be howling to affect your group at 100 yards. Beside which, outdoors you have options for shooting positions, whereas at Phoenix you only have the sitting position.
Did you buy the Mauser they had for sale?

phoenix isn't a must just an idea i don't have anywhere to shoot with a well set range anywhere i go shooting it'll be guess work and pacing out to find the range but i might just buy a range finder so that'll solve that problem

waste of money for me i have a place to shoot just not a place properly measured out plus the place i shoot provieds its own free targets all year round the set up make both me and the farmer happy
