404 Jeffery

.404 Jeffery, good round for African big 5. I've one by CZ550 Safari Classic, beautiful rifle. Has been to Namibia once with success, no complaints.
Should go for it even if you don't plan on hunting in Africa. You can always try it on our own Grizzlies.

Just curious - how does your shoulder feel when you pull the trigger on something like that?

I just can't imagine grouping a caliber like this in with the "fun day at the range" rifles :)

Is this just a "I want one because" or do you have a specific use - just curious...

My .375 Ultra, which kicks out bullets of similar weight a bit faster is actually pleasurable to shoot, except from prone, but even prone is manageable for someone hardened to enthusiastic recoil. I can hold mine prone for 5 rounds, but lose interest for shooting more than 3 rounds prone from a hot loaded .416 Rigby (350s at 2850). For me, the Rigby defines the upper limit for a general purpose hunting rifle, yet it has the flat trajectory and sufficient accuracy at longish ranges to excel in the role. On thing to consider carefully with this class of rifle is the position of the ocular of the scope. Providing a stock with the correct LOP, should the ocular lie behind the cocking piece of the rifle, the chances of a serious scope cut increases dramatically. If the factory mounting options doesn't keep the ocular far enough ahead, a custom mounting system is preferable to attempting to outrun the recoil velocity of that scope.

Couldnt find a Winchester so goin with the Rem 700. Will keep my .416 as is as its mint. Would probably kick myself later if I rebarreled the win...

I'll be waiting to see how it goes. Looks like you've already got the barrel sold so you're off to the races. Plus with Douglas in your back yard you can probably get some shop time with him (maybe in exchange for the barrel) and really keep the costs down.

Yep! Seems there was a pretty good one shot a few years back with a 404, but it was finished off with a 30-06. :)

Ted

Was that the Chadwick ram ?

Brother Charles filled a Dall sheep tag with his as well as four Bison tags that I'm aware of.
He never found it lacking for power or reach...

My apologies for taking so long getting back to you, Kevan. Somehow missed this.

Yes, it was the Chadwick ram. Chadwick shot the ram for meat, and hit it a bit low. When they found it, the guide, Roy Hargreaves, finished it off. Another guide, Frank Golata was also with him on that hunt, IIRC.

Every time I drive through Ft. Nelson and look at that ram, I am astonished. Marg and I saw it again last week on the way home.

Your brother, Charlie, used his 404 for everything. He was a great man, and what a marvelous stock maker! Not nearly in the same manner as yourself, but we miss him up here.

Best,
Ted

The fact is that 95% of us could very well get along with a 30/06 for 95% of the hunting here in Canada. Most larger bore owners own them for no other reason than "I want one because".

I've owned a 375 on and off for years. Anything I've shot with it would have died just the same with a 30/06. It would be no different for a 404 except components for a 375 are a lot less expensive.

I concur ! I currently own & have owned numerous Big bores . None were fun at the bench, but for a few rounds at any one session manageable.
The worse kicker was my lite SAKO 338 Imp. ( 338 RUM eqv. )
PLEASE lets not confuse"Want" with" Need" . If you want & can afford then you should have .
I simply regret selling some ,( a Rem BDL 8mm & a pre64 M-70 300H&H by POAckley ) to finance some of my big Boys .
But so what, Enjoy your guns , & share...Let some one at the range try a shot...maybe it's the only chance they'll get.
OR..maybe it will ignite a spark in them to Need a Big Bore .
Just sayin'
Build your 404 & enjoy it !

My buddy bought a CZ BA in .416 Rigby and it it nicer to shoot than my .338 win Mag Classic model 70 .Like a 12 gauge off the bench.................you just roll with it and it cuts 1/2" groups Harold

I've always said that "I just want one" is the best and most defensible reason for another rifle.
