Was at the range today with my Buffalo Classic for the first run, Managed 2" groups at 75 yards However I think I am using the wrong powders for cast bulets currently using H-4895 @ 49.0 gr for 405 gr
I had some suggestions however I would like to through out the question here as well.
The second thing I was told was there is some packing plastic wad type that can be used to stop lead fowling it is added just behind the bullet,
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks guys I am new to the cast bullet/ 45/70 loads.

Hey Jason, I am new to throwing "straight lead" too.
What I have gathered so far is to avoid the leading you can go as fast as you like if you use a paper patch. I believe it is a band of paper around the slug. I have been waiting for some kind of a response in my 38-55 thread in regards to this but haven't heard back from anyone yet.
Don't know what kind of paper, how wide a band or how many wraps is needed either.
Another newer trick may be to use a crimp on gas check. I think they are available for most all calibers. I think you can put them on yourself if you cast your own or if you have a bunch already too.

SOMEBODY HELP US NEWBIES PLEASE!!!!!!

I think it would be neat to user the traditional paper patch but if it is a big pain,
I will be asking the Bullet Barn to gas check my little care package before they ship it out.
When I find some more info I will let you know if someone else hasn't piped up before.

In the orig win highwall 45/60 I'm shooting SR 4759 is working beautifully....Its a hard to get powder, but long since touted as the cast bullet favorite...I think the two reasons for this is its BP typ burning characteristics, and laying down an even layer of graphite makes follow up shots virtually lead fowl free...PS 405, good to see large dia

Noel ....the 38-55 can be tricky to load for if you don't know the groove size the throat size and how large a cast bullet your chamber will allow you to chamber....you mite luck out and get the right sized bullet from the get-go but....if I were you I would have a gunsmith do a chamber/throat/groove cast and tell you what you need for bullet size....overwise you maybe just pissing in the dark til you stumble on a load and proper bullet size...I'm talking about loads that are over 1600 fps with 250gr. bullets...
For shooting and casting bullets there are site's that cater better to your questions than this one...try the following and do a "dogpile" search also for more..
www.castboolits.gunloads.com
www.leverguns.com
www.greybeardoutdoors.com forum on paperpatched bullets
www.beartoothbullets.com 38-55 & 45-70 loads,etc..
you have a lot to learn and you'll soon find out that you"ll never learn it all when it comes to casting bullets and shooting them.... :)..cheers mic

Thanks alot nrut, I will do just that. as far as the bore dia. I will just call my gunsmith and see what he bores his barrels too. He is very very popular for his barrel work, will have to see if he does them all the same.
Thanks for the info!

Noel you are lucky to have a barrel cut by Mr. Smith from what I have read about his work...tell us more about your Sav. 99 that he rebored for you ....what model is it and what was the cal. before his re-bore job....Did you find out what the groove dia. is ???... I just spent major bucks on some safes but hope to get some work done by him when my finances recover....cheers mic

I use AA5744 with a 405 gr. bullet. Standard load is 27 gr. but I shoot lite with 23 gr. 5744 is not position or temperature sensitive. I dont know who carries it in Ontario but Wholesale Sports in the west does.

Im new to the rifle game and as long as Im doing my part, they're in the black. Sometimes touching even at a hundred. Once I settle down the plates fall. Its just getting myself to settle is the problem.
