408 Cheytac build. what action what barrel

Hey there

This winter im building a 408 Cheytac. im thinking lawton, m8000 , and i might as well let them build the barrel to there action.

any advice on this would be great.

also i have to choose a stock before i start construction of course, so oppinions on great quality long range stocks would be nice too.

i will be shooting up 1500yards with this gun , and want to keep it about 15 lbs give or take no big deal.

i plan to use 420gr hunting ammo for the gun.

thats all i got for now . feel free to post any info you got will help me not waist my $$$$$$$

Not to stray from your original question, but don't you think that 1500 yds is a little too easy for this caliber? You are better off saving your money and going .338 Lapua.

you can save more by going 7mm remmag an 300wm, these caliber are capable to 1500, also there is 6.5X284 savage make them in 30" tube.

.300 Win Mag would be another great option, like GB said. And much cheaper than .338, which is what I suggested above.

If you are sure that you want a 408CT and going through all the hoops and hurdles to get a Lawton action, definitely get them to spin on one of their barrels too. They make a very good barrel.

I can supply McGowen barrels and Jamison brass.

Confirm your supply of bullets and dies as this can be a PITA.

Given that you are planning on using hunting ammo, LR hunting is on the menu. You should visit Longrangehunting.com where this is taken seriously and there is tons of knowledge.

If hunting at those distances are the goal, then 30cal is about as small as I would go AND it will get the job done when pushing the heavies at speed.. 338 would be great. 408 an option if you can get the right bullets.

For the 338, 300gr Sierra MK's have been used with success for years at longer distances. The new Berger 300gr Hybrid could also work very well too - if we could get more bullets.

For a case, consider the 338-408CT (the 338LM is a bit small for this type of task). Ballistics are amazing and not all that hard to set up. Plus you have a much easier time with bullet selection.

A popular wildcat is the 338-416 Rigby improved. Hunters have taken big game at very long distances with this puppy.

Even the 375-408CT can be very interesting.

Remember that being able to deliver the shot at those distances is tough. Have a good discussion about recoil brakes.

Had the pleasure of shooting a 408CT out to 1400ish yards a few years back. It definitely hit with authority.

Hunting at 1500 yards???.

You are NOT going to get a 15 pound heavy 40 cal gun to shoot reliably at that distance. You are also NOT going to get hunting bullets to hit accurately at that distance.

The cartridge/bullet are but two variables in a boat load that have to be overcome to shoot at those distances accurately.

If you want to be flamboyant, shoot a 50, at least there are more available components and bullets. If you want to be realistic, start practicing with a custom-built 338. (Lapua, Edge) Any GOOD reputable barrel installed and chambered by a good gunsmith, and master the art and science of precision reloading. 1500 yards is NO cake walk unless and until you know what you are doing.

thanks for the input guys, i have had the pleasure of firing countless rounds with the 338LM and my own 300rum also my 7mm at distances up to 800yards. as i have a home made range with a closed in shack that seats four people and has realy nice bench. the range is out to 800yards with 12inch round steel targets. i do realize theres a bit more drop between 800 and 1500 but how do you get better if you don't try.

hunting at 1500yards is crazy, your right and i probably never will , but i would like to wear out a few barrels trying my ass off,and in the mean time have a great long distance gun with huge knock down power . any other gun with the same ballistics as the 408 i would look at as well ?

what do you guys think of the XLR industries stocks , im really lean'en toward them.
