409 barrel length

Yes, I suspected it had been cut, probably made into a coach gun for cowboy shooting. Maybe I will see at some point if the barrels are thick enough to have screw in chokes installed. Otherwise I suppose it will make a good bush gun for grouse.

The closest thing I came up with in the 2011 Standard Catalog Of Firearms was the Beretta Model 409 PB. Quotation:

A 12, 16, 20, and 28 gauge boxlock, double-barrel shotgun with 27", 28" or 30" barrels with double triggers and extractors and various choke combinations. Blued with a checkered walnut stock. Manufactured between 1934 and 1964.

A shame it's been cut, even in poor condition, it lists it at $250, fair condition doubling that.

Yes, I had a person tell me awhile ago about the 27" barrel being listed as the shortest in the standard catalog of firearms. However this person has a 409 with 26" barrels and he knows they are original so he said the books aren't always correct. Another person thought they might have indeed been available with 25" barrels but I am doubting that so that's why I wondered if anyone else might know. And when the standard catalog of firearms says "blued", are they talking just the barrels because this gun has the fully sculpted nickel receiver.

With older Berettas anything is possible. Also with a European gunmaker that works in metric measurements a barrel might not be exactly as described when measured in inches. But if the barrels are cyl/cyl and the proof marks indicate the presence of choke then the gun has definitely been cut.
