41 Colt reloading newbie

Rusty Wood in BC

Unfortunately, Rusty Wood is out of stock and they say they have had it on order from Starline for a year now with no ETA. I've tried all the Canadian dealers listed on Starline's website and everyone seems to be out of stock with it backordered.

I know have all the reloading equipment but dead in the water due to powder shortages. I just bought a pound of pyrodex plus P. I have to pick it up next time I go south, I bought a book with 41 colt reloading data and it states you can use Pyrodex P 15.0 grains @ 742 fps.

Also my number 1 shell holder isn’t quite wide enough. I tried the star line brass and even one ancient shell I found in a jar of my great grandfathers bullet collection. I have read that guys widen these out with a file or dremel. Has anyone here had to do that?

As for lube, I make my own using beeswax and crisco (maybe there’s olive oil in there as well? Anyway you can google it). Place the bullets base down in a pie pan, heat up the lube until liquid in a pyrex container in the microwave (carefully). Pour the melted lube into the pie pan until it reaches above the lube rings, but not the crimp ring and then let cool until hard. After it cools, all you have to do is pop the bullets out.

Hey Jord I saw you talking about reloading just wondering if you've done any 41 lc reloads? I just purchased a colt thunderer and im getting some hand reloading equipment but I've never done any reloads before

What do you want to know? Its been a while but I used to reload 41lc with both heeled and hollow base bullets. I have also fireformed 38special brass to 41lc.

I used trail boss and unique. Ill try and dig theough my files for the load data

Is it just as simple as getting brass primer, lead, and powder, and just removing the primer, giving it a new primer, reshaping it, and putting the lead in? I thought it assumed it would be, but I've heard it's more complicated

That's pretty much it. For the heeled bullets you need a special crimper die. For hollow base you just use the roll crimp in the bullet seater die. I am pretty sure the Redding 41 dies have a crimp in it.

Another point to note. Starline brass is the length required for hollow base bullets. If you want to use heeled bullets you will need to trim a mile off the brass so it will fit in your cylinder when the bullet is seated. There are some special heeled bullets made to seat in the long brass, but I haven't been able to find a source or mold for them
