I just invested some cash in milling cutters and more tooling for my lathe and milling machine, in order to build a mold for a decent 41 LC bullet.
I'm planning on a heeled/hollow base design as per Elmer Keith's findings.
This is what I've come up with so far:
Overall length-.760"
Hollow depth-.280"
Base dia.-.390"
Nose dia-.405"
Base length-.450
Nose length-.310
Weight 200g
3 groove
Flat nose

Any different suggestions?
 
Nose dia sounds ok, my SAA barrel slugs at .404.

Old factory base dia. is .386. I am told new Starline brass is thicker and may not chamber at .390 bullet dia.

Just something to check out before spending the cash because they have to be used as cast unless you also build a special 2 dia. sizeing die.

My 2 cents...

Definitely go with a flat nose...the long tapered round nose of the original heeled mold I have doesnt give great accuracy. The more lead touching that bore the better. Ive shot heeled and HB in my 41's. Ive got pretty good results out of the heeled (after I opened up the base).

I know a fellow in the U.S. that has been experimenting with different 41 molds for years...from his (and my) experience, make the head as long as you can and the heel as short as you can while still being able to crimp it properly. I'll mic mine at home and see if I can give you some lengths that I think might be better.

As for grooves. I found that more/smaller grooves gave better accuracy than fewer/wider grooves. I might go with 3 on the head and another 1 on the heel.

Ive got a beautiful heeled mold that has 2 on the head and 2 on the heel. When I hollowed the base I was getting 1 1/2" groups at 25 yrds off the bench. My opionion of the ideal mold would be to take that one, shorten the base a bit, put a flat nose on it (or a RF nose) and a hollow base.
 
I gave up on the idea when I found M T CHAMBERS bullets. I picked up 1000 HB from him and a couple hundred brass from Buffalo Arms.
Ben's bullets are absolutely flawless! I cannot say enough about the quality and service he provides. He is first-rate in my books.
