I was going thru some old piles of paper and came across a correspondence I had last year with Anthony from Henry repeating arms. I reread it and noticed it mentions the 41 mag in the steel line up. As I've been looking to add a 40 cal to my stable I got to thinking a lever gun would be nice as opposed to another pistol caliber carbine in 40 SW or 10 auto
House renos and a baby on the way my Chapuis sxs in 450/400 3" is going to have less put in its account each week so it'll b slightly longer before I get one

Having no experience with the 41 mag I come here for real expressions of love or hate
Factory ammo is quite easy to find with premium loadings but ill be hand loading anyway.
As for use realistically grouse and rabbits and wolves/coyotes. The same as my 9mm just right carbine. I'd carry it when scouting for bear and wolf sign and casual walks around camp for targets of opportunity. Basically I don't have a 40 caliber and I want one
So with that rambling let's hear some thoughts about a 41 mag lever gun vs another 40 cal pistol round

.40+ caliber pistol round rifles: I have a .45 Long Colt (/.410 SG) H&R Survivor. Handloaded with 300gr XTP bullets at 1500 fps MV. Fun and cheap shooting.

Also a .44 Rem. Mag. Ruger Deerfield Carbine which I handload with 240gr XTP bullets at 1800 fps MV. Close range Deer slayer. It's a real hoot.

How would you compare the 41 to a 44? I figure they're about the same but have never played with the 41 mag

You were kind of looking for a .40 S&W or a 10 mm before? Well the 41 Mag has a fair bit more punch. Not quite as much as a .44 Mag though.

Lots of online ballistics available, and without putting too fine a point on it, it's kind of a nice in between for the .357 Magnum and the .44 Magnum.

The 200 gr. bullet would be about the velocity and sectional density equivalent of the 158 gr. 357 load or the 240 gr.44 Magnum load. I might lean toward a slightly heavier cast bullet.

You would be very pleased with a Henry in .41 Magnum. I believe the brass receiver guns are a little smoother, though; more natural lubricity. And that seems to bear out if you handle the two side by side.

I was looking at other pistol calibers before I found out about the Henry in 41 mag. Not really into the brass frames but the case colored would be nice
Something different from my jrc. Think I may price the Henry out. Cast up some bullets for plinking and see what I can get a jacketed bullet upto in a 20" barrel

Lots of extra punch out of a rifle barrel, that the .40 S&W won't see to much of. I wasn't too big a fan of the "gold", so I artificially aged mine. I didn't want to go extremely dark, but I added patina with a fair bit of blue "tarnishing".

Lots of Americans use it for deer hunting in revolvers. The extra 14" should add almost a couple hundred feet per second. Think it'll be a Xmas gift to myself if I can find one

I recently acquired a S&W 57 Classic and was a little surprised when I sought out factory ammo and bullets. I've since managed to source a lifetime supply of components but .410 bullets and 41 Magnum cases don't show up on the shelves very often. PR had a couple boxes of Nosler JHP's and a few hundred Starline cases which I snapped up.
Definitely a "save your brass" cartridge as compared to 357 or 44 Magnum.

I find .41 Mag offers a useful amount of felt recoil reduction over the .44 Mag, probably around 25%

Appearantly its also a lot less mechanically abusive on N frame Smiths, allowing far more shooting between tuneups.
