.410 AR-15 Shotgun...

Take a 16 gauge brass bottom...expand the upper portion to the same width as a 12ga bore...then insert and block-crimp the plastic hull...load the cartridge to an overall length of 2-1/2"...then you have a rimless 12ga shell that will fit single-stacked in an AR mag.

Your posts don't make any sense. Do you think that the Saiga was the first automatic shotgun? Hell no! By your logic, anything based off of an original design is a rip off.

I wonder if the germans know that Kalishnakov ripped off their MP44 when he came up the AK.

Someone should tell the Swede's to protect their intellectual property before someone else decides to use direct gas impingement in a rifle design.:rolleyes:
 
So after a little thought and discussion with another member I looked at the possibility of using 50BMG brass lathed and cut to accept 12ga plastic hulls...think about having a 12ga upper for an AR-15

The shells would obviously have to be shorter than normal to fit the length of the magwell and allow for a magazine(2.5") but the idea seems doable. The width of a 12ga chamber is at minimum 0.810...50BMG is 0.804 at the rim.

Any other ideas or comments?

Wouldn't it make more sense to build it to a 16 or 20 gauge ?
The best ides would be to have max firepower (we can only have 5 rounds in those 30round mags anyways) with the smallest standard gauge...
Cut down 12 gauge would be a hassle...

I'd prefer it in 8 gauge rimfire with some sort of Beta-C magazine, but thats just me :D .


Actually your idea isn't that bad, have you thought of maybe using an ar-10 type platform for the extra length in the magwell?
 
I had thought about the AR10 as a platform, but there are more people with AR15 rifles out there than AR10's. The AR10 would allow for an unmodified 12gauge shell, but at the same time the 12gaAuto would lead to less feed issues for "other" types of uses.

Both ideas are good...AR10 with unmodified shells...and AR15 with proprietary shells.

The real test is in the consumer...if the design were made to be inexpensive and the shells readily available and cheap...then it would catch on much like all of the other new cartridge upper designs out there.

The other thing that crossed my mind was potential feeding issues and magazine seating heights...but what I figured was that with the use of the thicker walled modified 50BMG casing, one could make the bolt so that it had magazine cuts in it and thusly not have to worry about potential case rupture, like you would get with a 12ga shotshell if you had done the same thing.

With a standard 12ga, the brass bottom is quite thin and stamped into shape with other internals present...it still needs to have a complete covering of the back of the casing by the bolt. The 50BMG casing wouldn't have that problem and thusly the feeding line of the bolt could be dropped by almost a 1/4"

I don't see the point of an AR .410 in that configuration. The guy is clearly shooting slugs, and the presence of the flash hider suggests that's the only rounds it is designed for.

So if you have a semi auto .410 shooting slugs, why not stick with your normal AR or alternatively a .40 cal SMG? Less recoil, more controllable, higher capacity and better ballistics.
