I’m new to shotgun loading. I was given a cheap 12 gauge loader with a shotgun years ago so have some components. Experienced in rifle reloading thou. But the price of .410 ammo makes hand loading attractive. I purchased 50 peices of magtec .410 2.5” brass. The loading data that I can find online is for specific shotguns shells. So I’m looking for some guidance to make some plinking loads with components I have on hand.

2.5” magtec shells, have a large pistol primer. I need to find primers
#4 steel shot
Federal .410 wads no .410sc
Felt fiber wads, to cap

A few powders that my quick research look in the correct burn range.
Winchester 296
H4198
Imr4198
Lilgun
Hercules greendot

I cant think of any reason that you could not use any load data for 2.5" .410 plastic cartridges, EXCEPT for the wads used since wads designed for and used in plastic hulls would probably be pretty loose in a brass case with thinner walls. A robust over powder wad might mitigate any loose fit of a plastic wad by providing the appropriate seal. However, while this may not be helpful, I will share how I load mine just in case. I shoot both Magtech and fire formed .303 British cases in my vintage .410 SXS but I use black powder. My load consists of 30 grains of FFF, then a waxed carton wad (punched form milk cartons) then a dry, 1/8" thick felt wad (punched from sheets I bought off Amazon) then another 1/8" felt wad soaked in bear grease, another waxed carton wad, that column compressed, then 1/2OZ shot, another waxed carton wad then lightly compressed again, then the remaining space I the case (1/8") filled with bee's wax (dripped in from a candle) to seal and hold everything together. I then use a number stamp pressed into the wax to indicate the shot size in that case.

I’d stay away from the steel without a proper wad for it and the federal is not it. Also stay away from h4198 any old data for h4198 is from before they changed the powder slightly to help with temperature sensitivity and green dot is not a .410 powder. H110(w296) and lil gun are just fine.

All this said shotshell is not metallic loading get some data and follow it exactly hull powder primer wad and shot(I would avoid steel in .410 and probably brass hulls).
Magtech hulls being ballon head are not really for smokeless I’m sure it can be done if I was to do it I’d use data for a straight walled hull with a lower end pressure.

Anyone tried solid projectile like a 40 cal bullet? Always wanted to try it in a 45lc case.
It be kinda pointless in a smooth bore. I have thought about attaching wads kinda like a brenneke to a .357 hollow base wad cutter. Also .45 colt cases are a little short for such things and whatever you do don’t try firing anything like a .45 colt out of a .410. As a all solid slugs out of a full choke could be bad.

I did try various solutions: bullet only, bullet with a bras skirt soldered to it, paper patched 357cal 200gr bullet, 200gr ball extruded in an oblong shape...
the accuracy was just not there

edit: tried all these in brass cases
