.410 for a beginner, appropriate or discouraging?

Good for you. The 20 I bought for my GF was the best gun investment I made, She feels involved, and I get to buy whatever I want and she's interested. (READ: no nagging about more guns...)

Excellent choice and not just because I have a Remington 1100 Skeet in 28 gauge to introduce women shooters to the sport. ;)

Now all you need is a 28 gauge reloader.

410. is for old men who cant handle the recoil but are good enough it don't matter the pattern size or those of us who know we can now use it ok with practice.

definitly not a beginner gun, this was said before and its what i did with my ex gf. I went down to ye old local gunshop and picked up a cheap single shot 20 gauge youth model and swapped out the old pad. she was in love! but not with me for long, when she left soon she got her pal and took the gun.

Looks like I bought her a new 1100 28 gauge, figured I'd do it right and buy the best gun for the job.

Well done,Ardent.I have a 28 gauge Remington Model 1100 and they are a fine working, nice feeling shotgun.I am sure your girlfriend will be well pleased with it and you.:)

Frustrating. I was introduced to grouse hunting with a Lakefield Mossberg .410 pump. I now have an uncontrollable eye-twitch every time someone mentions ".410".

I know this is bringing back a thread from the dead, but I stumbled apon this thread in a 410 search......... I nearly pissed myself laughing when I read this. I have a similar twitch when I hear someone mention a 410 backpacker.... I always call them a fudgepacker, because when you buy one, and realize that you need alot of luck to hit a popcan from 10 feet away because they shoot 3 feet high at that distant, you get the feeling that IGA just inserted a pickle in your bottom, the second that you handed over the cash.

My gf hates anything that's not a 410. And she's loves only fancy walnut and sxs guns. You got lucky. My buddies gf is 4'11" 102lbs and she shoots a 12ga sxs ic/m 26" barrels. I load her some 7/8 oz loads going 1200fps and she says they don't kick her at all and she's damn good at breaking clays on the farm I no longer crack off any short jokes anymore. But the main point missed in this thread is a pic of her and her new gun. Anyway best of luck

I have yet to find a pratical use for a .410, but that's just my opinion.
I'd start her off with a 20 gauge, with light loads.
And not too short a barrel. Makes a differance with recoil.

"...problem with the .410 is the light patterns..." And fewer pellets. Think 20 guage semi-auto for the recoil sensitive.
