410 for a single rabbit hunted/shot

Thanks, incidentally my setup of choice is a baikal scout .410 / .22..... I don't worry too much about predators in WMU 65.... But plenty of bears, coyotes and a few Timberwolves at the camp in 62..... And yes, certainly some consolation over a .22......

Sounds boring huh?
Well a half ounce load of 7.5 birdshot from the small 2 1/2 inch Challenger shell did the trick at a whopping 9 yards.
Launched from my latest acquisition, a Springfield/CZ M6 Scout in 22 Hornet/410.
Worst part was waiting for the #1 Wolves, #2 Coyotes, #3 Deer hunters, to give me some breathing space to hunt.
Best part was returning from a hunt without a sore back. (10 gauge at 10 plus pounds!) :(

let the games commence!
I have the some rifle, but mine is M6 in 22lr/410. I would love to have 22 hornet version, but have been thinking about buying the 22 hornet insert for the 410.

The old [back when they regulated both barrels to hit the same place]Savage 24 in .22/.410 delivers 30 yard chicken killing patterns and slugs on a bean can at 50 yards. A .410 brass jag doesn't fit in the muzzle so they must be tightly choked.I've had two 30-30/20ga barrel Savages that didn't hit within a yard of each other. The rifle barrel would shoot MOA at 75 yards with irons but the shotgun was useless.Harold

It might sound kind of silly, but even the little 410 gives me some extra measure of personal warm and fuzzy with the ability of the second barrel holding a single slug or five 000 buckshot pellets as an option.

Just so you don't don't rely too much on the warm and fuzzy, I will tell you from personal experience that generally a 410 slug against a black bear won't do very much to incapacitate and more likely just annoy him. :)

A nice start(?) to the season Mr. Brutus!

I wish you the best of luck with the hare harvesting this winter!

Regarding gun choice; as Brutus already knows, my choice is .22WMR. Lots of reach and kills hares emphatically (but must be limited to head/neck shots). Running shots? They usually don't run and if they do they don't go far and are very predictable.

I don't worry about bears. Too many people worry too much about bears, IMO. Wolves? Meh. If some wolves want to mess with me, I have 100% confidence in the .22WMR. It's got 3x the energy of a .22LR, so the wolf or wolves would end up having a pretty damned bad day. Cougar? It'll be on my back before I know it- if I am not dead already, then I'm stabbing the bastid repeatedly. I might win, or I might not. Having a 12GA and slugs won't change that.

A $million in life insurance is all I need to enjoy the outdoors without worrying.

New name for 'em ??

My idearz:

Hare-keys
Bouncy Gobblers
Hare'y Cocks

If you don't know, then just imagine a tiny little pig-deer that tastes like dark-meat turkey.

(A subtle (not so?) tribute to Mr. K-L)

^Ironsighter, you are never boring friend! lol

On a more sober note, I much like yourself ironsighter, feel adequately armed with my latest choice.
Myself I really believe a sense of self confidence and situational awareness, goes a long long way in avoiding really close entanglements with the claw and tooth beasts of this earth. And in my somewhat numerous (12-14?) bumping into black bears on foot in the forest, rarely did I feel that I was truly in dire need of a firearm.

If worse goes to worst, it (critter) will be the recipient of both barrels at close range,
then if all that fails, 7.5 inches of cold steel as a last resort. A good news story at least. lol

But I really don't believe it would come to that myself. This is not grizzly or polar bear country folks.

In the meanwhile I continue my one day hunting trips, on familiar turf, with bunnies and grouse filling my larder and no sore back at the end of the wonderful outdoors day. With some extra luck, maybe the odd coyote taken with the Hornet ammunition.

my 2 bits only

Cheers

I put two of them in the time machine (pressure cooker) tonight with an onion, some rye (Gibson's Rare), some water, some apple juice, some oregano, some celery salt.

45 minutes later it was falling off the bones and my daughter had all the rest of the pizza ingredients ready; fresh dough and sauce, mushrooms, peppers, cheese...

Italian Hare Pie! It was de-friggin-licious.

I just "winged" the seasoning choice. I only put about a 1/2 teaspoon of each, so it didn't do a whole lot for the flavour. The onion probably helped, though, and I am sure the rye did. :)

If you gave it to someone and told them it was turkey, they wouldn't think twice. Tender and moist with those long strands like in a turkey leg or thigh.

Next time I make "Pulled Hare" I'm skipping the slow cooker and just going to use the time machine like this, but with just apple juice, onions and cumin.

How the heck do you figure steel shot is an advantage??? With a .410 on rabbits and hares pellet count is irrelevant, energy is where it's at...

3" lead #6's from a .410 has accounted for hundreds of bunnies for me... a single .410 is a great bunny gun... a SXS or O/U .410 is a "greater" bunny gun... a pump or semi .410 is pretty nice on bunnies also... and then you have 28 gauges, which maybe the best all round choice on bunnies, given their varying (no pun intended) habitats.

Can't argue with this!

I'm starting to develop some love for the little .410 bore after a very rocky start many years ago.

I'm liking #6 shot, preferably from 3" shells; I have found #6 from 2 1/2" out to 20 meters is okay too. I always aim for the head, but shot hits all the front half of the animal on a broadside shot.
