When I try to crimp it doesn't crimp completely, and it buckles every third hull. The only way I can get an almost proper crimp is to put a .456 pistol bullet in the crimp die and push the hull against the bottom of it very carefully. It doesn't appear to be missing any pieces. All I have to compare it to is my 12ga Lee load-all which is an absolute dream to use in comparison. Can anyone help me get this thing to work?

MEC has short videos to troubleshoot crimping. I ran into a similar issue but was because new AA wads are the wrong size for the old .410 AA compression formed hulls.
Two adjustments to be made - crimp starter and final crimp.
If spindex does not align pre-crimp readily you can put a mark on the outside to manually align a ridge with hull fold.
Final crimp is likely set too low for stack height if you are crushing hulls.

I wish I hadn't figured this out the hard way. I don't understand why MEC does have a ridge or alignment mark on the spindex especially for 410. I used a silver sharpie on all of mine.

.410 is the hardest of shot shells to load. I have a AA hull load that I load with about 15 less pellets (#9) than the recommended payload just to get better crimp.
Crimp starter is working perfectly. Final crimp crushes hulls without completing the crimp. That's what doesn't seem to make any sense to me.

That's likely what is going on. I'm using the red winchester wads. Are they the wrong ones for the new style hulls?
Are you sure...without enough pre-crimp you will never get a good crimp. It is hard to have too much pre-crimp, yes possible, but in my experience more is better.
Your cam is too low for sure and maybe your punch as well. I already mentioned reducing the payload a little bit but the other thing I find is a must for 410 is after shot fill, tap the full hull on something to settle the shot down further.
Those should be correct. follow the book for recipes.
