So in another thread, a member says the following:

It's a lot of carbine for eastern Canada but it can also fire 2.5" .410 shot shells for rabbits!
And the light is awfully handy at night.

Can I really shoot .410 from my Marlin 1895 GBL 45-70??

Will it effect the rifling ?

Anyone done it ?

Pics ? (and pattern of pellets on a target picture?)

it can be done..........does nothing to the rifling.........shot patterns are huge so keep your shots close, pattern your gun to your ammo......I am sure sunray will be here soon to tell you that it cannot be done, but he'd be wrong..............

That is just another great feature of the 45-70 and adds to the versatility of any rifle chambered in it............

Clearly it's not the setup for going wingshooting pheasants ;) but if you are deer/moose/black bear hunting and think that the sound of a .410 won't scare off all of the game, you can shoot that grouse or rabbit for the evening meal.

As others have posted, load through the ejector port, extract with your fingers (sometimes my extractors will pull the .410 hull).

It can be done, but the pattern is concentric with a hole in the middle (generally, but its not consistent)... to nail a grouse or hare, use the edge of the pattern.

Have you tried it with a 45/70 Handi rifle? I'm wondering how the ejector would handle the .410 rim.

If you reload just use 10gr of unique some wadding fill case with shot and cap it with wax or a 45cal round ball. then it will cycle and eject. that's what I do

I had a handi rifle and the 410 did not work with it. It would slip behind the ejector. It does work with all the marlins 1895 in 4570 that I have and I could not get it to work in the marlin444 due to the chamber being tight with the 410 shells(Winchester). I heard Remington 410 work in marlin444. The shot pattern is like a doughnut so to hit the birds it must know the pattern. I used marlin for the major part of hunting season this year and got a lot of chicks with it.

I have a .45-70 Marlin 1895GS, what would you estimate the maximum effective range to be? I also have a 444S but I haven't tried to see if .410 shells actually fit in it. Do they?

I'm told that they work in the .444, but have not personally seen it done... you will have no problem in your 1895 though... IME the max range is about 30 feet give or take... the rifling really does a number on the pattern.
