410 over under - best for money on the lower end

If he already has a 12, have him try aguila minishells. Feels like shooting a 410, patterns better, and saves the cost of a new gun for now. At least it can help him wait until the right thing comes along.

I have a Stevens model 555 in 28 gauge.
Great little grouse getter.
Better patterns than a 410 and cheaper ammo too.

Got my wife a Canuck O/U 410 for Christmas a couple of years ago. It was on sale, 599 I think. So far, a very nice little gun, no problems.

Skip the 410, get him a Mossberg SA28. The recoil won't be much more, but the 28 gauge is much more effective on birds.

Better yet skip the .410 AND the 28 gauge and get a 20g. A lighter weight 20g with 7/8 oz loads will outperform both and still have light recoil.

Yes a gas operated semi auto 20 gauge, would be an excellent choice.
