The U.S. Military adopted the Mossberg Pump Gun as a standard issue shotgun. Any firearm used by the Military has to undergo a series of tests, including dirt, mud, water, etc.
Remington made a .410 pump shotgun in their 870 series, and Winchester made the Model 42 (although a 42 will cost you a lot of bucks today.) Also, Browning BPS shotguns came in .410.
.
For the difference in the shells, I'd go 20g. The $$ difference in the will be made up in just a few boxes. Can a $15/box, new of 410 be found?
Edit: After comparing shotguns on the WSS site, 20 is cheaper.
..BPS 20g $560/410 $600...Moss500 same $$ for either...870Wing 20g$740/410 $790.
Would guess the a used 410 pump would be way harder to find then 20g one.

Browning BPSs look like a good value for money to me. You can get one with a walnut stock and gloss bluing for less than the price of a new Wingmaster 870.
The "price no object" choice would be a Winchester Model 42. They're essentially a scaled down Model 12. They're nice guns, but command high prices even for fairly ordinary examples. There was also a small run made in Japan a few years ago that wouldn't be as valuable, but not many were made.
I used to own a Mossberg 500 .410, I used it mostly to shoot starlings. I liked the scaled down receiver and it was a fairly lively gun. That being said I am saving for a Browning .410 BPS as we speak.
That's what I was trying to get across. Lots of guys would like to get a 410... they just don't know that its almost $20 for a box of shells now.

And yes I own 2 of them
