410 shot guns

full choke with #4 shot. i find the pellets are just the right size to take down chickens in the praries. tried 7 1/2 shot last year and i had to be 15 yards or less!

I have had no problems shooting sharptails on the wing at 25 to 30 yards using a 410 with 7-1/2 shot and a full choke.

Depends entirely on your gun, the shell, the target, the range and your shooting style. The only way to know what patterns best is to shoot at a pattern board and see for yourself.
Be prepared for a disappointment! I like .410s, but any .410 that I have patterned is pretty poor compared to bigger shotguns.

Traditionally .410s used for hunting made up for thin patchy patterns with full choke. But full choke is a challenge to hit flying game with at close range. If you are a quick shot, a more open choke with small shot ( 7-1/2 and smaller) gives more even patterns and is more effective within 25-30 yds. If you are shooting stuff that is sitting, rabbits or grouse on the ground, large shot ( 6 +) may be an OK choice with full choke for slightly more range.

With a little experimenting you should be able to find the combination that gives you patterns that will regularly put 2-3 pellets on target.

For my gun...for actual hunting.... I use #6 and I have an M choke...keep things within 20 yards when I can. I also find that sometimes the 2 1/2" shells group better then then 3"

I only use the 410 on targets, so I'm shooting 1/2 ounce of 9's. In my 11-48 I use a mod choke tube in the Cutts. The spreader tube was far too patchy. I'm not sure what constrictions my tube set has, but its an older set and is a fixed choke. I need to pattern them this year, but I was happy with the breaks they gave me late last season.

i am shooting clays at 35 yrds with full and 7.5

popular shotgun back home for rabbit hunting with beagles.

I can also hit a milk jug with slugs from 50 yrd and just the bead... it might end up popping a deer this year...
