410 slug considerd centre fire?

Goal is to minimize waste while still executing a quick kill at 20 yards. No 100+ yard shots. I use a bow and xbow a lot as well as a rifle. My rifle caliber is 308win. I've also got a couple 12g. Never shot a deer at close range w a 12g. Much damage w slug or buck shot? Clean kill w buck shot? I know what 308 does

Depends on where you hit them. My son killed a yearling with a 300 RUM. Through the ribs. I had never seen so much blood. Looks like the bullet drained all the blood on the way out. When we gutted it, there was very, very little blood in the chest cavity. The next day, about a cup of blood had drained out. 1/2 in. hole on the way in, about 4 on the way out. Bang-flop. Didn't lose an ounce of meat. On the other hand, hammer the deer through both shoulders with just about any deer caliber, and you can almost leave the front in the bush. I got 2 deer this fall with 20 ga. 3" slugs pushing 350 gr. Accubonds. One heart shot, one liver and lung shot. No meat wasted. One bang flop, one took 1 hop.

It's pretty much always what's behind the gun rather than what's in or on the gun that matters. Tens of thousands of moose, deer and bears were shot with the lowly 44-40, 41's, you name it.

If you’ve got a 12ga, I’d just hit it with 2/34 inch slug and be done with it. Place it well and there’s no major meat loss.
