I personally have killed a couple of deer with a 410 and within a reasonable distance they are quite effective, since the original post was asking about a bolt action 410 slug gun and nobody presently makes one consider that you can make your own quite easily. An Enfield P14 action already has the correct bolt head diameter for a 410 case so no alterations are required and rifle barrels are available in .411" for the 405 winchester. Magtech makes brass 410 casings and Hornady makes a .411" interlock bullet that weighs 300grns, and because you now do not have to stay within normal 12,000psi pressure restrictions of a 410 cartridge you can make that bullet go right around 2250fps = 3400fpe give or take ie: 405win ballistics. With that said you will no longer have a light weight combination as the recoil is significant higher than your average 410 slug load so you need to build the gun accordingly. This combination still falls into the guidelines as a 410 shotgun and bingo you have an accurate bolt action 410 slug gun with all the ethical killing power you'll ever need.
Just a little food for thought.
