410 slug vs coyote?

You do know what a coyote looks like right? :slap:

At that distance even a .22lr would suffice!

Getting a coyote to come that close around here is not likely, unless your pushing them out of the bush and your blocking, like I already mentioned.

Nobody has questioned the effectiveness of the round rather it's range.

Would work, but if my old rotten memory serves me correctly you cannot carry single projectiles or shot larger than number 2 unless you have a big game license and an open big game season. Anyone with a current regulation summary out there who could confirm/deny this??

I believe it is more like he can't carry them if there is an open big game season unless he has a tag, and license.

If there is no season he should be fine.

Edit: Here you go:

If you are hunting small game in an area where there is an open season for deer, moose, elk, or black bear, you may not possess or use a rifle of greater muzzle energy than 400 foot-pounds or shells loaded with ball or with shot larger than No. 2 shot (or
if using non-toxic shot, you may not use steel shot larger than triple BBB steel shot, or bismuth shot that is larger than double BB bismuth shot), unless you possess a valid licence to hunt deer, moose, elk or black bear as the case may be.
A person hunting small game may not carry or use a rifle of greater calibre than a .275-calibre rifle, except a muzzle-loading gun, in the geograhic areas of of Brant, Chatham-Kent, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton, Hamilton, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk, Northumberland, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington or York.

you can call them in that close. I have on a couple of occassions while turkey hunting. It was not my intention of coarse if i tried to I would probably have a hard time. With the right conditions I know it can be done, and like others have mentioned the 410 is enough. If you have a 12 guage might as well use it instead though, I would think. Shells are cheaper and you have more range probably.

Ballistically the 410 slug is more than capable. From muzzle to when it hit's the dirt.

Puttin the round on the lil' bugger is the challenge. Not too many 410 platforms that offer the practical accuracy to do it....but everyone's circumstances are different. Is it that's the only firearm you own or are you choosing it?
Arguably a poor choice when you have other options.

Anything from literally the 22lr up will kill a coyote if you get the round into/through the boiler room. So whether it doesn't get there at all, bounces off a rib, or any other reason, that's the limitation.

Shooter/rifle/optic/range limitations are the issue, not the round.

I do believe you would be ok in B.C. to hunt song dogs with a 410 slug during hunting seasons without a big game tag. All that is needed is a hunting license. If you want to hunt yotes, why don't you buy a 22/250 put a good hunk of glass on top and use that?

There is a thread on Shotgun world by a guy that has taken deer with a 410 slug at about 40 yards using a winchester 9410 so a coyote should not prove a problem.I have a winchester 9410 myself and with iron sights its ideal for slug shooting though I haven t done so myself as I m having too much fun using it for rabbit hunting. As for coyotes the 410 could do the job but it is not a shell I would use for serious coyote hunting.

I've Shot em In the noggin out to 80 yards with my nylon 66, from cheap Remington subsonic to CCI Stingers they were all just as dead. Shoot a bear in the melon with a 22 from 60 yards and under there quite dead as well. So I'm guessing a 410 will do the job just fine, with #4 birdshot it kills beaver 30 feet away and ya'll know how tough them critters are!

you havnt tried the accuracy of the 410 with a slug and full choke because if you did you would not have bothered to bring this topic up if thats all you got for a gun maybe its time to get another one

.410 slugs have droped deer many times coyotes will not be a problem

people use big hi-power rifles becuase thay have to compensate for being off target

the slugs out of the normal .410 witch has a full choke 000 buck would do better

I have an over and under combo gun. 22mag over 410. I can hit ground squirrels with the 410 slug at around 30 yards fairly consistantly. At the 40 yard indoor range, a 5 round slug group goes into a 4" circle. I cannot use IC or Full chokes since they don't give me that kind of accuracy. I needed to use a modified choke with whitebox win 2 1/2" slugs. So if you have a 410 with interchangeable chokes, try all of your chokes with the slugs you have because it can make a huge difference on how the slugs perform.

Maybe for Christmas, Santa can bring you some punctuation.
