416 Barret. New LR cannon

Why all the debate about a .416 Barret being used by the military? Thought I haven't heard otherwise, I'd be willing to bet the development of this cartridge was mainly intended for civilian sales.

With many states looking to ban .50 BMG from private ownership, perhaps Barret has seen the writing on the wall and decided to shift production to ensure that his firearms are legal for sale everywhere in the USA? Makes good business sense to me.

You are correct. It is marketed to CA.

LRC, then why not a huge cased 338 and 300grMK or whatever Wildcat comes out with (320gr I think maybe heavier).

338-416Rigby improved, 30 to 36" barrel will get the 300gr MK 3200 to 3300fps. That's a lot of hitting powder at distance in any bodies books. That is the largest high pressure commercially available case I know of next to the BMG.

Not sure if the Lazz cases are any bigger????

There are a few 338 project rifles working on shortened 50BMG cases but then there is the whole primer issue again. We are getting to the point where there is nothing readily bigger to use for our cannons.

Plus unless we go heavier (bullet availability issue), going faster just causes bullets to blow up.

17 cal vs 416, close enough...:)

Whenever I shoot .22s I just a tack a zero onto the distance I'm shooting at! Then you can pretend to be a long range sniper:p I do most of my shooting at 500 to a 1000 metres *cough*

Any one track down any ballistic data on this cartridge? I still havent been able to find anything on it, but it realy seems to have my interest. I wrote Barrett and all they sent was a rundown on the rifle, here it is minus the pics.

Well the word from Washington is " NO!" We will not be seeing any of the Barrets in 416 up here either. They claim that because the firearm can be easily modified to shoot 50 they will not grant an export permit. " The boltface and action are both readily 50 cal accecptable, and as it is a simple task to rebarrel the rifle, the Dept of State therefore will not approve any exportation to Canada"
So it appears we are on our own to build them if we want 416s here.
We are still waiting to see what the story will be on brass and bullets.
Keep you posted

Hopefully this year will enlighten us alot, I know that ther has been some buzz on the 416 with the FCSA, mostly discussions about whether it will be like the 408, and be claimed to be what it really is not capable of delivering. I think and hope Barrett is smart enough to have learned from the 408 debacle.
I still think seeing as it is easy to get a barrel and reamer I will go ahead and build 1 if only for myself, just to see what is and ins't possible with the caliber. There is still some room somewhere in the vault for it.

Barrett Model 99 .416 Barrett - Update

So it may be possible after all to get an approved export permit for the Barrett Model 99 in .416 Barrett. :dancingbanana:

Quote Questar "We expect to start receiving limited quantities of the Barrett Model 99's in .416Barrett... State Department has approved our Export Permit request based on supply of specific end-user documents... they WILL ALLOW civilian end-user purchase of this model".

Does anyone know if ammunition is available? Exportable? Importable? Apparently the rifle is shipped with 40 rounds.

I asked at the Barret booth last weekend what was happening with this round. Big announcement last year, then nothing.

The rep said that it is easy to build rifles, but the ammo is a slow area. They have them loaded by (??forget the name, something like State Arsenal??), and they dont want to sell a bunch of guns, then not be able to supply ammo.
The project is still alive though.

Good news on getting it up here!

As long as the 50BMG primer is restricted from export, the 416 Barret is a dead duck in Canada.

If a mega dollar shooting experience is desired, the biggest bucks for a bang is still the 408 Chey Tac. This you can always make noise with.

Maybe no bullets but you will still be able to make noise...

As interested as I was in the .416 I couldn't hold out and bought a .50BMG so .416 is outa the picture for me now, still looks like a great rig. As far as .50 primers HWSNBN has more in stock than I could possibly ever count along with a no shortage of anything .50, so don't let that stop ya. Big Bore is alive and growing in Canada. And the U.S. isn't the only source for quality .50bmg bits and pieces there are many countries out there that don't think us a terrorist threat and remember us as friends.

If your interested in the .408 CheyTac I believe Richard Graves from Alberta Wildcat has a selection of .408 Bullets.

There are sources in Canada for the big toys, just got to dig a little deeper in your search, For some reason some who sell .50bmg rifles cannot seem to supply ammo, or limited quantities so do your homework .416,.50BMG .408 Cheytac make expensive wall hangers and have big appetites. It's not a cheap hobby so do your homework. But it is great fun and worth every penny:D
