I'm outside plowing snow with the tractor today at our new acreage. I noticed beside the house is an old plastic rain barrel that's SOLID full up of ice. So I scooped it up in the bucket, and decided to plop it at the far end of the yard and have some fun.

The Rifle:

Brno ZKK 602 in 416 Rigby

The Load:

400gr Hornady RN Interlock, pushed by 81gr IMR 4350 @ ~2100ft/s

I setup 50 yards away, its the furthest I could get without walking in 4 feet of snow. I cracked off 3 rounds, just aiming for about "minute of barrel" I know the gun shoots, so I'm not after a grouping, just having some good ol fun. I wanted to find a dowel or something similar to check depth, turns out, I didn't need to, all 3 rounds were through and through's!

Some Pix:

Walking behind I noticed some debris.... I didn't expect the rounds to go right though!

3 rounds, not a bad grouping either!

I was shooting slightly downwards, from 5ft elevated platform, and buried behind that snow is a backstop of rail road ties, never know, come spring I might run across the projectiles :)

Let it be known, if ever charged by a wild drum-o-ice, bring enough gun, and that gun is a 416 Rigby.

Merry Christmas, hope everyone's having as much fun as me!

400 grainers from a 416 Rigby shot into a beaver house will evacuate the house. Great way to control them when they get to be a problem and a real western Canuck solution. Now there's no need to further justify the purchase of rifles of this magnitude.

I'm still looking for some 350gr'ers if anyone comes across any.... Like to get a few different loads worked up, some 400gr solids for making crushed ice (no lead contamination :D ) 400gr expander s for...well...whatever... and 350gr for a little flatter shooting pot shot's at coyotes.

Have you tried Russels? I think that's where I used to buy my 350 gr Xs and Magtips.

Awesome, that Rigby is a Hammer, what a great cartridge and gun.

I always think of this quote when someone mentions the 416:

........ "the bullets performed perfectly,....(they) crashed through both sides of the buffalo, breaking the far shoulder and pitching chunks of bone out on the Serengeti"

Ross Seyfried on the 350 gr Barnes X bullets fired in the 416 caliber, cape buffalo hunt, Tanzania

Very cool media  (literally!).

Any idea what the performance would be like if you had those 400 grain bullets flying closer to 2,400 fps... ?

(might be time to fill in those holes, add a second barrel and have another go!)

Not sure, this is just the starting load from the Hornady manual, Its a pleasure to shoot, I enjoy it more than the 375H&H actually, and I don't really have a need for a more potent load yet... I've got a TON of barrels, but this was just a spur of the moment need to shoot something, winter fever I suppose.

I believe a better test would be the same barrel but full of liquid water. Not ice. I believe the bullets would make it through the water as well tho. I should try something like this with my .458 Lott.

Packed dirt is easier to penetrate than loose dirt so that may apply here as well.
