Who owns one and loads for it? I picked up some Hornady 400gr RN, and looking for some starting load suggestions. Rifle is a CZ550.

Hodgdon's site has 400 grain SP load data. That'll do for an RN too. Uses powder by the bucket. The starting load of H1000, for example, is 110 grains.

Ok, got some loaded up and ready for trials.

400gr Hornady RN, 96-97-98grs H4831 (3 rounds of each), Norma case, CCI250 primer

I have a friend who is heavy into the .416's.....Rigbys, Winchester magnums and Weatherby Magnums. I will ask him what he loads and get back to you.

I have some 410gr Woodleigh Weldcore bullets and hope to load them soon too. It is a nice classic round and loaded to 2300-2400fps with 400gr bullets is easy on brass and more than enough for the big stuff.

Here is my Rigby

I have a box of those Weldcores in Federal factory ammo. I'm saving them - maybe for im next year (depending on rifle permit issues).

H4831SC is a great Rigby powder. My go to load with 350 X Bullets is 101.0 gr. Hornady lists max with the 400 gr RN as 98.6 gr of H4831. The case runs at such low pressure that it will probably handle more than that, but 2400 is all one really needs (or wants) out of a 400 grain bullet.

Are your bullets the new DGX? I got a box from the Hornady rep at SCI but haven't tried them yet.

I shoot the 416 Rigby, I use the Hornady .416"CAL 400 GR RN INTERLOCK with 108gr of IMR 7828 in Norma brass, Winchester Magnum primers. I group about 2-3" @ 100 M, three shot group.

Regards

Pete

Yes, the Weldcores are definately not for punching holes in paper. That's where the "cheap" Hornadys come in. Does Corlane still carry Woodleigh?

I don't have any DGX for the Rigby, but I do have some for my .458 and also have some DGS.

I load 96 grains of RL22 under the 400 grain Barnes banded solids, or 400 gr Swift A-Frames in Norma brass for 2350 fps. The load will cut enough cloverleafs to make you want to stay on the bench, while kicking enough that you know it's better to leave. More to the point, it kills elephant and buffalo. Accuracy isn't the game, reliability and performance are.
