well the parts are coming together, have the barrel blank, the dies and the reamer should be here next week.....question is, "what action should I build it on"?

I have been planning to do it on a Pre'64 M70 that I will be getting sometime this winter......and stuff it into a Boyd's laminate to give it some weight:D ...but then I have a nickel plated Rem 700 with a factory stainless 300 Win Mag tube and an HS stock that I haven't even shot for two years.....even robbed the Leupold off it for my son's 7Mag this year;) ...it would be a simple rebarrel to put the 416 on the Remington....what do you guys think?

I agree with the CRF crowd...but I think a pre-64 action should be in a classic cartridge, something like a .300 H&H, .375 H&H or .404 Jeffery.

A 416, even the Taylor version is not classic? I know that it is not a Rigby but ........!!! well he can bore it out!!!:D :D :D

I'd vote for the mod. 70 in Taylor. Will be a deluxe DGR. If you go Rem. action you might as well go .416 Rem. I've had 2 .416 Rem. and currently load for my buddies Taylor. He loves it for swatting Moose . We load 325 X bullets and they've worked very well so far. If useing the pre 64 try to start with a magnum action as they take a bit of fiddleing to make a standard one feed properly.

Well, as much as tradition should dictate something else, it also dictates that a fighting rifle should be CRF. So build on the pre-64. Besides, it's not like you're tearing down a minty Super Grade in 300 H&H to build the Taylor on. An action is just an action.

I have built 416 Taylors on a variety of actions. The cartridge is a very good fit for a pre-64 M70 since the cartridge length is right for the magazine. It is also a good fit in a Mauser or a Ruger 77.
My first choice for a serious rifle would be a 30/06 length Mauser. Second choice would be a pre-64 M70. Third would be anything else.
I figure that a Remington 700 is better suited to the 416 Remington. No point in wasting the magazine length on the shorter Taylor cartridge. Regards, Bill.

maybe I better run back to the gunshow and grab that Parker Hale in 308 Norma....a simple rebarrel and we'd be in 416 land on Mauser......:D

Sounds like a good idea...

You left a 308 Norma mag at the gunshow!

Ted

yup,...an early Parker Hale Safari Deluxe with the charging slot in the left receiver wall,..had Parker Hale bases too.....nice shape for $350.....I don't have much use for Mausers myself.
