Apparently the premise of improving on existing calibers hits the wall at 8mm because the projectiles take powder space, making them wimpy.

No using monometal bullets and eschewing über-pointy spitzers (or spitzers at all for that matter) will maximize case capacity and velocity. Guys talked about the 375 WSM on the Campfire and there would have been plenty of complaining if it couldn't cut the mustard.

That Speer 350gr is well-regarded from my research. I bought 150 of them to try out in my 416 Ruger... haven't loaded up yet, but should make a good lower-recoil target and deer round.

The Ruger .416 is sweet but fat. The 416 Rigby, Wby. Kick like a mule. The .416 Taylor and .416 Remington are great choices if you are a reloader or thinking about getting into reloading. If you just want to get into it cheap and dirty buy a rugger .416 or remington factory rifle (both in that $1.000 - $1300.00 range). If you are hung up on the .416 like me you should find a cheap Brno 602 or CZ 550 magnum and build a .416 Remington and that magazine holds 4 or 5 I think. The extra magazine capacity is a real bonus and the brass is cheap compared to others. the Brno 602 has better quality trigger springs and overall parts but it is that pot belly magazine that makes them desirable for custom builds.

I've actually spent the last day looking at the 458 socom. That necked down to a 416 would provide a lot of thump. Now to figure out how to get it to feed in a bolt action
