416r stainless weldable or compatable ?

I've researched that 416r can't be welded but I've seen tig welds on it. My suspicion is that the high sulphur content would cause weld contamination and need to be welded, cleaned and re-welded ... can anyone give me experiences with welding 416r? ?
Also would any other 400 series of stainless be compatable to weld to it?
I've been asked to do a custom lever loop for a marlin and wondered if I could waterjet a new loop from stsinless and have it tig welded on. I found a guy that does these levers but wouldn't offer any advice and I don't know if shipping to the US is a option.
Any advice ???

If it's a large loop, you know you could just buy one. Someone does make an aftermarket loop for them
 
You can weld it.. But 416r is a martensitic stainless. It's hardened.

The weld wouldn't have the same heat treat, so wouldn't be as strong.

That being said.. How strong does a lever loop really need to be?
 
For something non critical, it can usually be made to hold. Done lots of 416mx to 316 fusion welds and all did just fine. A few with 303 to 304-316 stainless as well.
416 to 416 fusion would be a lot more likely to crack, use a 308 or 309 or 316.
What's allowed and what isn't usually has a lot to do with application and accepted codes.

Most commonly available is 304, then 316.
309 filler is pretty common for dissimilar stainless types and some other such uses, but 308 and 316 can usually be fine, color won't quite match though but its close.
Looking a little more into it they also make 410 filler, to weld a lot of the 400 series though I never used it.
I have some 416 here, I'll weld a couple pieces together tomorrow and see how it comes out.
 
Depends what you really need to get out of it. Using 300 series will be softer but more corrosion resistant. Would be a bit strange welding austenitic stainless to martensitic stainless.

All it really comes down to is... How much does a lever really need to handle lol.
 
Hey thanks for the help. .. I haven't been on in a day or two.
This is going to be a donation of Time foable to a fellow shooter who suffered a hand injury . He has not been able to shoot for a couple years and I'm trying to get him out having fun again.
