420 yards...! Tracker 209

Could be. Once you get your sighting set up you can bang away all day when the wind isn't blowing.

Personally, the timing from the shot to the clang sounded too quick to be 420 yards to me. More like 200 - 250. I could be wrong thou -its been 3 or 4 months since I've shot any long range steel.

I have the same gun and it's accurate. I'm going to scope it for next season, but won't be following his procedure, as I already have a good one, and only shoot to about 200 yds.

P.S. did anyone else find it strange that every one of his "10 hits in a row" showed exactly the same dust trail from the impact?

I bought the SS version for my son 2yrs back, but the recoil was too much!! Even with 50gr charge.
It's not a bad entry level ml, I can't say I like the "open bolt" action though. But it'll do the trick.

With a 250 grain bullet going 2,200 at the muzzle...you bet.

Ya, but the load data he gave was 120gr 3F GOEX with a muzzle velocity of 1660 ft/sec. 1530 ft/lbs of energy.
And what length of barrel is on those Trackers?

I wonder how much energy is left at that range? Don't they recommend 750 ft/lbs for deer?

I didn't think it was ten hits in a row. Figured it for someone with a video clip, some editing software, and a burning need to stretch it all out to as long as they could.

Wonder how many tries it took him. From the cheering, it must have been a lot.
edit: went back and watched it to the end this time. Dunno how the rest of the world gets their sabots to work at all, given the care and attention he thinks he needs to give his to get them to work reliably. Overthinking, and underwhelming.

Cheers
Trev

Ya, with that load you could very well be right....never ran the ballistics on it. Not sure what barrel length is on it but it really wouldn't have a bearing on anything.

Not really that big of a feat......he worked up a load for one purpose, to hit a 24" target at 420 yards. It's not like it was his regular old hunting muzzleloader that he just took to the range and hit the target with. I'd have no difficulty doing the same thing with any of my muzzleloaders.

Optics are the big limiting factor for long-range hunting with a muzzleloader. There are plenty of adjustable turret and ballistic reticle scopes that allow hold on hair from 0-300 yards but after that there is just too much drop for the scope to handle. But if you aren't concerned about hold on hair, it's no big feat to dial a scope in for 420 yards. It would just kind of make the muzzleloader useless at closer ranges.

Guys with 45/70s with similar ballistics routinely shoot twice this distance and beyond.

I think all of the extra effort he went to when loading was a bit much. I'd have no trouble dropping three Pyro pellets down my Omega and seating a 250-grain Shockwave over top of it and sighting in for 400 metres.

so now you've got a muzzle loader that can accurately hit targets at 400yrd.

yet another reason inlines should be disalowed in a muzzle loader season.

no tradition left.

Ya, you are likely right that my Hawken caplock should disallowed in muzzleloader seasons. With the right sight it's more than capable of hitting a 400 metre target.

yup, if you want to base your shot on "that should be about right" holdover. personaly thats a ethical no-no.

inlines, scopes, sabots, what happened to the "traditional" hunting that muzzle loader seasons were based upon?

oh yes, and jim shocky is the devil

flame on!

No more so than an in-line. With the right sights or scope, there is no reason that the Hawken couldn't make that shot. Most Hakens are more accurate than cheap in-lines like the tracker and more than capable of 1,600fps velocities. If you read my previous posts you'll see that this wouldn't be possible with an in line sighted for hunting ranges either......

Of course 109 inches of hold over is a no no...with either gun.
