anyone load for this hear?
bought a set of lee dies, and had some bertam brass.
ive never been so disapointed in a set of dies/ shell holder in my life.
shellholder broke on the very first round, poped the rim off, with the brass half way out of the die.
i should have bought a better set, a 3 die set, to flair the mouth for the lead bullet, but.
anyways, totally disapointed. who hear uses/ has a better set?

I'm not a big fan of Lee Stuff.... but I do use their Universal Case Expander...it is meant for belling any case mouth, any caliber......so all I really need are 2 die sets for all my reloading, .43 Mauser bullets avail. from M.T. Chambers Supply.

Sounds like you didn't lube the case or use enough lube.

there was lotsa lube on the case, ive loaded for 30+ years.
even put a bit inside, seeing as these were brand new dies. got the case half way out, as soon as the neck hit the xpander ball on the way out, pop, the shellhoher came apart. the shell is/ was lose in the die, when i spun it out of the press.
just poor equipment. think thats it for lee dies for me.

I've loaded over 250,000 38Sp and more 9mm using Lee dies also .223 too and have never had a problem with them.

I've had problems with RCBS dies but they were my fault - not enough lube.

I load for it using 45/90 brass and Lee dies

I just use Springfield Trapdoor loads which you can find anywhere. The 71/84 is a fair bit stronger than the Springfield so you are well within safe limits, and I can't imaginw why you'd want to go hotter (but you could).

I had the same problem with Lee dies. The shell holder rim popped off with the first round, even though i used plenty of lube. The replacement broke as well. The dealer mentioned something about an error in case hardening. The third shell holder works fine and the dies work well.

I've pretty much weaned myself away from Lee products. Even though their warranty is excellent, you still have the inconvenience of a part that fails. That said I still use the Lee Factory crimp die for my pistol ammo. I try to get RCBS and Redding products now.

i do not like lee dies at all but some of the other reloading gear they make is good like the hand primer and some other odds and ends. i have been reloading for 25 years and have a little bit of lyman, rcbs and lee reloading tools at my work bench. decapping rods in all makes is not good as they break or bend too easy so i make my own one piece decapping rod for my dies and they work good. happy reloading

to me the problem sounds like you need to anneal the cases before resizing them. Sounds like the neck is just too stiff.
For the record, I have a number of Lee dies and like them and have not had any problem with them.

cheers mooncoon

there was lube on the inside of the case, as im not a greenhorn.....
im sure there was a temper prob with the shelholder, sharp pop, and the structure inside, looks very crystaline.
i usually dont have much bad to say about lee products, personally, im a RCBS fan.

not your fault beater, have a look at some other forums, it seems that everyone that has ever used the lee 43 mauser dies has broken the shell holder.

The problem is the instructions on adjusting the die, it says to screw the die in until it touches the shell holder then screw it in 1/4 to 1/2 turn more. This may work with the other shell holders but there is so little metal in the rim of the .43 shell holder it just pops it off. It happened to me also , bought an RCBS shell holder , adjusted until it just touches then back it off a hair, so there is no down pressure on the shell holder, this seems to work. I get 390 gr lead from " THE BULLET BARN" (do a search.) and use smokeless .45-70 loads for the SPRINGFIELD 1873 using same bullet weight .

yes, i got some nice bullet barn .446 bullets, got a new RCBS shellholder, anealed all the virgin BERTRAM brass, was all ready to go.
sized em all, primed, all good.
only prob is, no way to flare the case a tiny bit to start the lead bullet, dont wana skin them.
no problem, search around in the 40+ die sets, gotta be somethin...oh yea, 45-70, used the flare dies, ever so lightly, just maybe a 1/16th".
cool, looks good, should work.
weigh out some powder, shell back in the press, seat a bullet....hmmmm LEE dies will not close up the flared end of the case now....
extreamly disapointed now.

i figure i threw 32.92 $ out the window on them dies. get mad, try to fine a PH number for lee on the paper with the dies, gona give em a blast...no number
look on the net, on the lee site....no number....
extreamly disapointed in LEE dies now.
never again, you get what you pay for ....

Lee dies should clean up the flare!!!! unscrew(remove) decap pin and stem from sizer die and run case part way into sizing die.....should be like a taper crimp. You may want to purchase the Lee Universal Exp. Die....it will flare any case!

I have the same die set and a RCBS shell holder . The RCBS shell holder is thicker in the rim than the Lee shell holder and does not allow the bullet crimp to take place the way it should , so I tried with my broken Lee shell holder and it crimped the way it was designed. The case was easy to remove from the seater/crimp die even without the pull of the shell holder.
