Been thinking about getting a good ol' Single Action Army. Marstar has several left in calibre .44-40 Winchester. But I can't find any place that stocks that ammo. Not Canada Ammo. Not SFRC. Not Marstar. They don't even list it as an option. I think I can see why all the .44-40s are unsold. Or am I missing something? Does anyone know if it is available in Canada?

Wholesale sports lists it for close to $40 for 50**

You really have to reload for it if you're going to shoot at all.

I like the 44-40, but when I bought my Pietta SAA I chose 45 Colt. Partly because I'm bad for picking a cartridge before the gun, and partly because carbide dies are available, which for 44-40 they are not.

Still, I get away with greasing 1 in 3 cases when I reload 44-40

** and 45 Colt is even more expensive in the store..

The bullet barn makes this and sells it as factory loading. Check them out. I think it was $32/50 rounds. The stuff they have there is for pistols. You can get them to up-load it to the regular speed for rifles that gives you about 1200 ft/sec. I am thinking of buying some as I don't reload yet, but rarely get out shooting and it would be nice to just be able to pick up about 4 boxes to mess around with.

I think that most people that shoot 44-40 re-load their own ammo due to scarcity and high cost. Unless you are planning on getting a Winchester Model 1873 chambered for this round you might be better off with .45 Colt or even .357/.38 Special.
I have a couple of SAA's in .45 Colt and it is close to a dollar a round for factory ammo so I reload in order to afford shooting these guns.
There are lots of SAA's on the Equipment Exchange in various calibres, you need to apply for access and wait a few days.
Here is a picture of my latest SAA in .45 Colt.

Have you called Ellwood Epps? Prophet River? Wholesale Sports in Saskatoon had 4 boxes last weekend. Yes, 44-40 can be a bit hard to find. I have a M92 Winchester in 44-40, and really like it.

yah i saw some of the brown box winchester at wholesale the other day, im assuming winchester just did a run of it, they probably only produce it a couple times a year. i bought my SAA pietta in 45lc as you can actually get it, 35$ a box of 50 from canada ammo i believe, and i have all the hard parts to reload it. now just to find a rossi ranch hand and maybe a fullsize lever in that caliber ;)

actually isnt the smith .460hv use 45lc as a low power option? like 38spcl in a 357?

You're finding out why pretty much everyone that has a .44-40 reloads their own. It's hard to find and when you do find any it costs the earth to buy.
