Hi guys :
I picked up a Remington 14 1/2 in 44-40 and I need bullets.
I slugged the bore and came up with. 427

I can shoot cast from it no problem but is there a. 427 jacketed bullet out there for a 44-40. ?
I cannot seem to find anything in. 427 dia .
I can get. .430 But I'm not sure if that will be too large to chamber and not sure about pressure levels.

Any advice for this gun would be appreciated.

Thanks

I agree... with cast you will want to use bullets 1 or 2 thou over the bore (better seal, accuracy and reduced leading), but for a jacketed bullet 1 thou under the bore should shoot very well... my best loads for .44 Mag in jacketed are slightly undersized.

Hodgdon's site only gives data for a .430" cast bullet. I don't think anybody makes a jacketed bullet due to the hordes of old rifles and revolvers out there.
Winchester still loads it and they use a .430. Mind you, it seems they don't make bullets. The Silvertip HP page lists it but has no data listed.
Ever think about casting your own? Try Lyman's site.

Sunray
Winchester site shows a. 426 bullet for the 44-40.
I have 200 bullets coming now to try.
I slugged the barrel and it came in at. 425-.426
I do cast bullets and will size them at. 427 to start.
I hear the Remington 14 1/2 sometimes suffers with shaved lead in the action if pumped up from the mag tube.
But if that is the case I will still hand feed them in single shot style.

Question .. for someone that does not reload, is it possible to buy 44-40 ammo? I am looking to buy a Winchester rifle in 44-40 calibre but can't find this ammo listed at any of the stores listed here on CGN ?!

I cast a 200 grain RF bullet and size it to .428 for my 14 1/2 and it eats them up just fine. I have never shot anything but lead bullets out of it and have had no issues at all.
If you are going to reload I highly recommend getting some Starline brass, it is the only brand I will use for any of my 44-40's anymore. Some people have troubles reloading this cartridge, if you treat it like a rifle cartridge you will do just fine and the 44-40 Lee FCD is a must in a tube fed magazine, it is the rifle type so no worries of is swagging down your lead bullet.

Epps only has 2 boxes of ammo in stock and they are commemorative so they are bloody expensive !
starline brass is on the way and I have some Winchester.

Anybody looking for 44-40 brass should go to the Prophet River website. They have it in stock for $26.99 per 100.
Recently, I have seen people on the EE with once fired 44-40 for twice the price of new brass. Needless to say, you should stay away from these parasites.
