Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on loading 44-40, I recently acquired a 1921-1928 Winchester 92 .44wcf and am finding it difficult to get load information on the internet

I use 7.6 gr of Unique with a 200 grain bullet
Also use 16 gr of IMR 4227 with a 200 grain cast bullet
4227 can be found relatavely easily but Unique on the other hand has not been available for quite some time

There is reloading data in both the Hornasy and Speer reloading manuals.
I use one of the Vihtavuori powders ... forget which one.

Hodgdon has data so do Lyman manuals including the cast bullet manual(3rd edition available as pdf). All else fails throw 40gr of black powder in there and a 200gr lead bullet.

My 1892 load 24gr of RE:7 Starline or Winchester brass/large pistol primer under a 220gr cast Jet Bullet. Data is sparse for RE#7 but is an excellent powder in both the 38-40 +44-40. Group at 50 yards .680" irons and old eyes. De-capped a couple of grouse no big game yet.

28 grains of H110 in a 44-40 seems like way to hot a load
your into 44 mag territory there
I wouldn't shoot that load through a toggle link action rifle that's for sure
A model 92 is a stronger action so maybe ok?

My 44-40 model 92 Winchester slugged out at .429 and have best accuracy with 200 gr Hornady xpt with 12 gr of blue dot at 1250 fps, very clean burning. Same bullet with imr 4227 was dirty burning with just ok accuracy.

Good question 🤔
Either a Looky-Mr H compilation or
a Looky-Alec discussion.

T’either way, proceed at your own wariness. 😳
When I played with H110 in the 44-40, I found that at lower levels the velocity was all over the place. It stabilized as the loads got steeper. I used no 44-40 data at all, and based the loads on loads for the 44Mag, which has a smaller case capacity. This can be dangerous with older versions of the 1892. Mine is a more modern custom assembly. I never got good grouping with it in my rifle, so dropped it.
The velocity swings were unpredictable and somewhat spooky. I know others have never experienced this, but I did.

I either use 8.0 (used to load 8.5) grains of Unique or 35 grains FFg Old E black powder over a cast bullet sized .429. Works in my SAA, 73 lever and model 92 SRC. Can load heavier but these work well. A model 92 can be loaded much hotter with 2400 being a tradition powder for that but that’s not my thing.

That is also my load for both my '66 and 1860. Works well but running out of Unique.
