44-40 Winchester

anyone have a good source for 44-40 Winchester? I purchased a box of 50 @ my local range last week for a jaw dropping $80. Every other ammo source I've checked seems to be out of stock. Is this generally expensive ammo?

Another thing about the .44-40 is that generally, if you are shooting it in an older rifle, the bullets will be to small in diameter and you will have crappy groups. I think that I read that the new manufacture Winchester .44-40 uses .426 Dia. bullets and a lot of older rifles have .429+ bore sizes.

I gotta say that I was pretty happy with the Super X 200 grain soft points that I put though my old model 92' last weekend. The gun was manufactured in 1906, and shot pretty true.

Sounds like time to take up reloading. Older style ammo can be hard to find.

Tier one armory carries black hills ammo. Their 44-40 looks to be sold out right now, but it lists for $42. Might be worth getting in touch with them.

I always figured they would run a buck a round.
Once it's over that, best to start reloading.
Seems there are some cast bullets right now in the EE
for reasonable?

You're probably right. I'm not sure if I'd reload to the extent of some of the members here, but I'd certainly look at purchasing an old Winchester hand loader for this particular round. It would be kinda fun to do it the way the cowboys did it back in the old West, plus it would help me get my feet wet in the craft

"...this generally expensive ammo?..." Mostly expensive due to it being odd. Now. Reloading has issues too. Cartridge uses an odd diameter bullet, as I recall.

This is what I don't understand....44-40 was hugely popular in its day and is a very desirable caliber nowadays with cowboy action shooting taking off. I find it odd that I can find 38-55 just about anywhere,but a cartridge that was used in both pistols and Winchester rifles is hard to find.

Set yourself up to reload, .44-40 is an easy cartridge to reload and information on the .44-40 rifles, pistols and cartridges, can be found at;

"...I don't understand..." It's kind of a daft cartridge. Almost a bottle necked case that was and is very thin. Uses a .427" bullet too. A .429" will do though. However, you should slug the barrel first. Groove diameters vary.
"...order it from where..." Your local gun shop can order anything you want. Be prepared to pay up front and order more than one box. Do not buy ammo on-line as the shipping will negate any cost savings.
