Hi...need some help here if someone can...i have a used euroarms 44 kentucky rifle...i am puzzled as to what i should try to load into the gun...i received some .437 balls with the gun, and some patching...i believe the patches are approx. 18 thou...this looks like a stuck "part way down the barrel", ball to me if i attempt to load these...i'm thinking a .433 ball with a 15 thou patch, but i've never loaded a smaller caliber like this before...any help would be appreciated...

thanks,

Wayne...

Usually you use a ball that is .010 smaller than the bore diameter of the gun. In your case try loading the .437 with a thin patch say around .010 and use a brass range rod so that if it is too tight you can still pound it down. Sounds terrible but the lead ball will swage down pretty quickly and it gets you out of the problem with the minimum of problems.
If the ball loads very easily try a thicker patch and work up to something that is firm yet yielding :>) ie gives good seal but is not overly difficult to load.
If the ball is difficult to load even with a thin patch drop down to .430 if you can find a mold.
It does strike me that the gun may be labelled according to the caliber of ball that it uses rather than the bore diameter

i do have some 10 thou patches so i'm going to try them as you mention....hmmm brass range rod...think i'll have to manufacture one from some dowelling and a handle (just in case)...thanks for the tips...

I have a uberti cattleman that is a percussion and you have to remove the cylander to load it. Anyway it says 44 black powder on the barrel for caliber and the barrel measures th same as a 45 colt so the guy I bought it from (carrey striker) told me to load 452 balls into it. When I load it the cylander shaves a tiny bit of lead off and the fit nice and snug. They go in easy though and shoot straight without any trouble.

.

What I am referring to is a piece of 3/8" solid brass rod. It has the weight to drive most any ball down the barrel. You can buy a piece from Budget Metals if you have them out your way. The company specializes in small orders of mostly iron but also sells drill rod and brass rod
Failing that you may be able to buy some from a local machine shop
