Hi everyone

Im building a 180 gr 357 mag heavy round with lil gun and got to thinking what a 44 mag hard cast high power load would look like

Im getting some 300 gr hard cast gas check .431 projectiles. Anyone tried this? What is a good lil gun powder range and what coal did you use or hear of others using?

I have many 44 mag marlin rifles so thought it would be fun to setup one with a heavy hitting super load.

Any suggestions on sighting in? Would an xs sight aperture have enough elevation ?

Thanks for any discussion and experience on this

With the micro-groove rifling they recommend a couple thou over bore size hard GC.Marlins are on the generous side bore wise in the .44 Long as the COAL allows cycling.Hopefully Marlins new owners will fix that and change the ROT to 1-20" for heavier bullets.

Checking Hodgdon reload data i'm thinking of starting with my 310 hard Cast GC at .431" and 20 Grain lil gun. Coal at 1.73"

Anyone tried this from a rifle / carbine? Any velocity & accuracy results? I'm thinking of trying 20Grain, then higher if no pressure signs.

I shoot LilGun with a 317gr hard cast in my 1894SBL Marlin (16.5" barrel) , 17.9grs does 1455 fps, OAL is 1.61"

With a similar mould (311gr) that is powder coated, I run 18.2grs for 1513 fps, OAL is same 1.61"

To compare, HSM Bear Load 305gr does 1220 fps

those sound like hard hitting loads for sure. thanks for the advice and chrono info. I'm going to see what a load similar to your powder coated load does with the Gas check bullet.

Interesing. I thought the Marlin 1-38 twist was too slow to stabilize bullets over about 265 gn.

Yesterday I tried a few hard cast gc 310 grainwith 20.5 grain lil gun. My shoulder definitely felt it as did the stump i was shooting at. There were no pressure signs on the brass and no hesitation on ejection, etc

Interesting note: last night I found load data on loaddata.com where someone has used 23.5 grain lilgun with 310 grain or 320 grain hard cast. Made me think I can try 21 grain as a max as seems to be a couple grains from other maxs. Ill chrono when i get a chance
