I'm a Cowboy Action shooter and my preferred choice of revolvers are 2x "Original" Ruger Vaqeros in .44 Magnum due to their accuracy. Max load for Cowboy Action is 1,000 fps. My current load is 4.5 grains of W231 pushing a 240 grain LSWC bullet. The gives me a MV of 594 FPS. Very little recoil. I have found that going lower than 4.1 grains of W231 that my accuracy fell dramatically. I also tried Unique in these revolver but I found that there was poor accuracy with light loads using this powder at 600 fps.

My Smith 629 was my first centrefire handgun. While it was impressive to load up about 17 gr. of Blue Dot under a 250 gr. Keith style SWC the fun wore off real fast. I went to a powder puff load of 4 gr. of Red Dot with the Keith bullet. Super easy to shoot and quote accurate as well. That big bullet filled up a lot of the case so I still got good ignition.

Just go to the Hogdon website.

You can get a recipe for almost any calibre, bullet and powder. Start loads and max loads on most of them.

If anyone has tested a particular powder in that calibre and it's not dangerous, it is probably on there.

Adjust up or down from start loads for whatever blows your hair back.
