44 mag - ballistics - bear

Yeah, I'm really jonesing for one now as well. But I'm still debating, whether 44 mag or 45-70 (yes, yes, I know the correct answer is both). Either way, I want a carbine length one, with a 16.5" to 18" barrel.
the more important choice is which rifle do you want, then what it is available in for the cartridge
45s are going to be larger frame usually, bigger in the hands, but can be down-loaded to 44 power too....
44 will never match the power potential of the 45...

round and round and round 🤪

Fair. The reason I want the shortie is that I want a backpacker that I can take into the brush as a backup in case any unwanted diners show up. And, obviously, for some boomfun at the range. Don't intend to do any serious hunting with it as such. That all says 44. Bbbbbbut 45-70

🤪 is correct.

For me it would be 44mag just because it is cheaper to shoot and a lot less recoil!
I have a 458 win mag when I feel the need to get shaken… and it would have to be a Winchester, preferably a take down… just like the op’s rifle really!

The CVA single shots in 44 mag are really calling my name. Perhaps kinda dumb because I already have a 450 BM but why not two, right?

Funny how in the water test the 270gr Hammerdown fusion round did a lot worse than I've seen in gel. You'd think the harder medium flattens it out more but who knows.

shot lots of 44mag and while i love the 240 grain loads, they work wicked but wanting more of a jam i went to 460 s&w
pricey sure but these days all ammo In Canada is expensive. I have lots of chrono data 9.3x62 vs 460 and end of the day 460 300gr was faster and harder hitting than factory 286 hornady. end of the day both kill #### dead.

I've shot the 300gr hornady xtp into water jugs. The 240gr is perfect expansion and ends up in the 4th to 5th jug. The 300gr went into the 7th with great expansion just a longer shank showing. I choose the 240gr xtp as I wanted the extra velocity. Noticeably more water splatter but I did not run any loads over my chronograph. I just picked a load of h110 a couple grains shy of max and loaded up. I have a cva td v2 stainless scout and I love it. So much I might get a 4570 as well. Waiting to see if I like the new stocks for the 360 bhmr version. Or if they're swappable with the v2 than maybe I could find someone to trade stocks

Kentucky range time has some nice videos comparing barrel lengths and velocities in gel. He has an entire series on the 44 mag and uses the xtp in 180 240 and 300
My results in water are almost identical for the rifle in 240 and 300gr. I haven't shot 180s yet.

I use Winchester 240gr white soft points. They drop anything I've shot. Deer, black bears, etc
Here's some proof. Cooking
