I recently acquired a Marlin .44 mag for a bush gun. It will mainly be used with light loads for grouse and varmints. My question is supposing I meet a black bear in my travels which of my two available bullets would penetrate better, I have on hand some hornady Xtp's and some plain Winchester hollowpoints both are propeled by fairly hefty charges of h110. Any previous experiences or any advice? Merci

I cant comment on those specific bullet choices, but I actively hunt deer/bear every year with a .44 mag. I shoot winchester white box 240 gr. soft points, and have yet to have an animal walk away. Last year was a 119 yrd. bang-flop on this sow:

I'd go instead with heavy hardcast, Wide Flat point or Long flat point bullets, from 290grs. to 325grs. in the .44 mag.......i used the 290gr. LFN to flatten a big bear with one shot that busted up both front shoulders, your hollow points won't do that.
